Javier Hernandez Aguiran is an armless Paralympic swimmer and sports journalist from Spain who represented the country at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, where he earned a Paralympic diploma.
Personal
Hernandez was born without arms,[1][2] and is from Zaragoza[1] in Aragon.[3] He works as a sports journalist.[1][4]
Hernandez won an award at the 2012 Aragonés Sports Gala.[5] In April 2013, he gave a motivational talk to Real Zaragoza before a game against Mallorca. The team had lost 15 games in a row at that time. The team went on to win the game, which Hernandez gave full credit to the team for doing.[2][6] In April 2013, he won an award at a Helios Zaragoza Swimming Centre hosted sports festival.[7] In November 2013, he was the speaker at the graduation ceremony for Kühnel Estudios Superiores, where 100 students were awarded their diplomas for competing their masters degree.[1]
Swimming
In 2011, Hernandez had a Plan ADOP scholarship worth €17,000.[8] In 2012, he trained at Ebro Sports Park and, along with Teresa Perales, was impacted by the pool's closure on 1 January 2013.[9] He competed at the 2012 Summer Paralympics,[1][10] finishing fourth in the 50 meter breaststroke.[4] This earned him an Paralympic diploma.[3][2] The London Games were his first.[10] A calendar by the Aragua Sports Association provided some funding assistance that allowed him to compete in London.[11] In 2012, following the London Games, he expressed a desire to compete at the 2016 Summer Paralympics but felt it was unlikely.[3]
