Janet Werner

Janet Werner (born 1959, Winnipeg, Manitoba) is a Montreal based artist.

Education

Janet Werner completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Maryland Institute, Baltimore, Maryland in 1985. She also holds a Masters of Fine Arts from Yale University School of Art and Architecture, New Haven Connecticut which she completed in 1987.[1]

Work

Janet Werner is known for her large scale portraits, and the insertion of her fictional figures into landscape. She has been focusing on portraiture since 1997. Recent paintings have explored the idea of realism and the photographic image. It can be said that the artist uses painting to deconstruct the everyday reality of the photographic image.[2]

Her work can be found in many private and public collections such as the Collection of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Ottawa; the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Québec; the Leonard and Bina Ellen Art Gallery, Montréal; the Mackenzie Art Gallery, Regina Owens Art Gallery, Sackville, N.B.; Mendel Art Gallery, Sasktoon Dunlop Art Gallery, Regina; Winnipeg Art Gallery, Winnipeg Kenderdine Art Gallery, Saskatoon ; University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge; Saskatchewan Arts Board, Regina; the Canada Council Art Bank, Ottawa.

The artist has exhibited widely across Canada and abroad. Notable and recent exhibitions include Beauty takes a holiday at Birch Libralato in Toronto; Who’s Sorry Now? at Parisian Laundry in Montreal; Buttercup I love you at Julia Garnatz Gallery in Cologne, Germany; Janet Werner at Tracey Lawrence Gallery in Vancouver.
