Janeshwar Mishra (5 August 1933 – 22 January 2010) was a politician from Samajwadi Party. He was member of the Parliament of India representing Uttar Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. He was known as Chhote Lohia (Lohia Jr.) for his commitment to socialist ideology.[1]

Life

He was born in Subh Natahi village in Ballia on 5 August 1933.[2][3] He was B.A. and LL.B.[4]

Political career

He started his political career as president of the student union of Doaba Inter College, after which he came to Allahabad and joined the Allahabad University. His entry into students politics began after he joined the Samajwadi Yuvajan Sabha and thereafter, he came in contact with the father of the socialist movement Dr Ram Manohar Lohia and Raj Narain. He was an ardent follower of Raj Narain and socialists were looking up at him after death of maverick leader Shri Raj Narain[2]

Despite ill-health, he participated in the party’s Statewide agitation in Allahabad on January 19 against price rise and corruption, his last public appearance.[5]

He was elected four times[6] for the Lok Sabha and served as a Union Minister in different capacities. He was also elected to the Rajya Sabha for three consecutive terms.

Lok Sabha

He represented Allahabad Lok Sabha constituency thrice.[3]

  1. He first became the member of Lok Sabha by defeating K D Malviya, the sitting Petroleum Minister in Indira Gandhi Cabinet from Phulpur constituency in Allahabad district in 1969–70.[3]
  2. Subsequently, he defeated V.P.Singh by almost 90,000 votes from Allahabad-Jamunapaar parliamentary constituency in 1977 elections.[5]
  3. Member of Sixth Lok Sabha, 1977–80 [4]
  4. Member of Ninth Lok Sabha, 1989–91 [4]

Union Minister

He first became union minister of state in 1977.

Mishra was a central minister in the governments headed by Morarji Desai, Chaudhary Charan Singh, V P Singh, Chandrashekhar, H D Deve Gowda and I K Gujral.[3][7]

He held portfolios like Petroleum,Water Resources Chemicals and Fertilisers, Energy, Shipping and Transport, Communication and Railways.[7]

He served as minister of state for Railways in the Chandra Shekhar government during 1990–91.[1]

He later became Railways Minister in the Chandra Shekhar government in 1990–91.[7]

Rajya Sabha

He was elected to Rajya Sabha in 1996.[3] He was re-elected to Rajya Sabha in 2000 and 2006 [4]

Death

He died on 22 January 2010 due to cardiac arrest at Tej Bahadur Sapru Hospital in Allahabad.[2][8] He had been ailing for some time. He was to be shifted to the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow.[1] He was cremated with full state honours in the presence of political leaders cutting across party lines.[9]

He is survived by two daughters.[7]

At the time of death he was the Samajwadi Partie's vice president and member of the Rajya Sabha.[1]

Influence

The new Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav credits Janeshwar Mishra with initiating him into politics.[10]
