James Whittaker (February 28, 1751 – July 20, 1787) was the second leader of the Shakers. He became leader following the death of Mother Ann Lee. Under Whittaker’s lead, the first Shaker house for public worship was built in 1785. In 1787 the Millennial Church of the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, was formally organized at Mount Lebanon. The church at Mount Lebanon became the model for all other Shaker communes. After James Whittaker’s death in 1787, Joseph Meacham became the next leader of the Shakers.
