Jalil Abbas Jilani

Jalil Abbas Jilani is a Pakistani diplomat and a current Ambassador to the United States. He is the 22nd Pakistani Ambassador to the United States. In his professional life, he has specialised in South Asian affairs. He was Foreign Secretary(Pakistan) from March 2012 to December 2013.

Ambassador Jilani was born on February 2, 1955 in Multan(Pakistan). He is the son of Makhdoom Azhar Hussain Jilani a former Public Commission Service officer and the younger brother of Asghar Hussain Jilani, former chief secretary of Punjab. Current Chief Justice of Pakistan Tassadduq Hussain Jilani is his maternal uncle.[1]

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law and M.Sc. in Defence and Strategic Studies.

After joining the Foreign Service of Pakistan in March 1979, he served at the Headquarters as Section Officer (1981-1982) and Director (1992-1995). He has served as Deputy Secretary, Prime Minister’s Secretariat (1989-1992), served at the Headquarters as Director General (South Asia & SAARC) from 2003-2007.[2] He also served as the Government’s Spokesman on Foreign Affairs (2005).

His other assignments include Deputy High Commissioner/Acting High Commissioner/First Consul/Acting Ambassador to

  • New Delhi (1999-2003)
  • Jeddah (1983-1985)
  • London (1985-1988)
  • Washington: (1995-1999)
  • New Delhi (1999-2003) and
  • Australia (2007-2009).

He has also served as Ambassador of Pakistan to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union. He used to interact with the NATO HQ based in Brussels on regular basis.[3]

He was appointed as Ambassador to the United States in December 2013.[4]
