Jacob Allen O'Brien (born September 25, 1984) is an American professional mixed martial artist. He has fought as a Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight for the UFC, WEC, and DREAM.

Background

O'Brien attended Franklin Central High School where he wrestled for four years, while earning IHSAA 215 lb. State Champion honors three years in a row from 2000–2003; holding a record of 125-4 over that time. O'Brien also attended Purdue University where he wrestled for two years, one year as starting heavyweight. He recorded a collegiate wrestling record of 14-18 his sophomore year.

Mixed martial arts career

Ultimate Fighting Championship

O'Brien entered MMA as a Heavyweight; he would later enter Ultimate Fighting Championship in the same division. O'Brien holds a notable win over Heath Herring, which he accomplished at UFC Fight Night 8. O'Brien was defeated for the first time by Andrei Arlovski at UFC 82. On July 19, 2008 O'Brien tasted defeat for the second time as he lost to Cain Velasquez via TKO at UFC: Silva vs. Irvin.

Move to Light Heavyweight

O'Brien later moved down to the Light Heavyweight division at UFC 94, where he defeated Christian Wellisch by split decision. In his fight against then-undefeated Jon "Bones" Jones at UFC 100 O'Brien lost via guillotine choke submission in the second round.

Post-UFC

In his first fight since leaving the UFC O'Brien fought Dave Hess at MMA Big Show - Triple Threat winning via submission (kimura) at 4:24 of round 2.

He then fought Toni Valtonen at FF 27 - Fight Festival 27 and won via unanimous decision.

DREAM

O'Brien was expected to make his debut with the DREAM promotion on July 10 in a Light Heavyweight bout against former Strikeforce and DREAM Champion Gegard Mousasi at Dream 15. O'Brien failed to make weight, weighing in at 212 lbs therefore was given a 10% purse deduction as well as a yellow card at the start of the fight. Just over 30 seconds into the fight, O'Brien was caught in a guillotine choke submission and choked out after an unsuccessful take-down attempt on Mousasi, thus losing his DREAM debut.[1]
