Jake Butler (born October 4, 1982) is an American mixed martial artist from Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey [1] and an economics graduate from Princeton University [2] whose decision to leave behind a career on Wall Street in order to travel to Asia and pursue a fighting career has been the subject of articles in newspapers, magazines and websites all over the world including ESPN, Wall Street Journal, New York Post, Taipei Times and Phnom Penh Post. He currently competes on ONE Fighting Championship, Asia's largest mixed martial arts organization.

Education

Butler attended Princeton University where he was two time captain of the wrestling team, competed at an NCAA Division One level and was an all-American in junior freestyle wrestling.[3][4]

Finance

After graduating from Princeton with a degree in economics in 2006 he followed many of his classmates into banking [5] and went to work on Wall Street with Thor Equities but became tired of the routine and decided to quit his job to move to South East Asia in 2008.[6]

Mixed Martial Arts

In 2011 Butler responded to an advertizement from Evolve MMA in Singapore which was looking for a wrestling coach to join its fight team. After a conversation with owner Chatri Sityodtong he was invited for a trial and offered a place on the team which he accepted.[7] The other successful candidate was US Olympian Heath Sims.[8] Butler says he made the decision to become a full-time martial artist because it was his 'passion'.[9]

ONE FC

Butler was signed by Singapore based promotion ONE FC and made his debut on the undercard of ONE Fighting Championship: Return of Warriors at Putra Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on February 2. He defeated Antonio Romulo from Indonesia by TKO (punches) midway through the opening round.[10]

In his second fight he took on Swain Congco from Saipan at ONE Fighting Championship: Kings and Champions at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on April 5 and again won by TKO (punches) midway through the opening round.[11]
