Jagatballavpur (community development block) (Bengali: জগতবল্লভপুর সমষ্টি উন্নয়ন ব্লক) is an administrative division in Howrah Sadar subdivision of Howrah district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Jagatballavpur police station serves this block. Headquarters of this block is at Munsirhat. Mansinhapur is an urban area in this block.[1][2]

Jagatballavpur is located at 22°40′44″N 88°07′02″E / 22.6788°N 88.1171°E / 22.6788; 88.1171

Jagatballavpur community development block has an area of 124.89  km2.[2]

Gram panchayats of Jagatballavpur block/panchayat samiti are: Baragachhia I, Baragachhia II, Gobindapur, Hantal Anantabati, Islampur, Jagatballavpur I, Jagatballavpur II, Laskarpur, Maju, Pantihal, Polegustia, Shankarhati I, Shankarhati II, and Shialdanga.[3]

Demographics

As per 2001 census, Jagatballavpur block had a total population of 225166, out of which 114,050 were males and 111,116 were females. Jagatballavpur block registered a population growth of 14.05 per cent during the 1991-2001 decade. Decadal growth for Howrah district was 12.76 per cent.[2] Decadal growth in West Bengal was 17.84 per cent.[4]

Scheduled castes at 52,400 formed around one-fourth the population. Scheduled tribes numbered 3,657.[5]

Literacy

As per 2001 census, Jagatballavpur block had a total literacy of 71.58 per cent for the 6+ age group. While male literacy was 79.34 per cent female literacy was 63.60 per cent. Howrah district had a total literacy of 77.01 per cent, male literacy being 83.22 per cent and female literacy being 70.11 per cent.[6]

Transport

Jagatballavpur is connected to Howrah by rail through the station of Bargachia of South Eastern Railway of Kharagpur division. Earlier railway was connected to here, later it was connected to Amta in the year 2000, by the then, Railway Minister, Mamata Banerjee, en route, Patihal, Munsirhat, Mahendralal, Maju and Haridaspur. The rail track to Amta is of single electrified line, but railways run nearly 10 to 12 services in all. There will be another rail line to Tarakeswar, en route Jangipara, Champadanga. These two routes were sanctioned by Railway Ministry in year 1971, but the later route is still not constructed.

Jagatballavpur area exchange with code 3214 serves: Ajodhya, Amta, Bagnan, Bakshirhat, Chitrasenpur, Gangadharpur, Jagatballavpur, Kalyanpur, Kanpur-Puras, Panchla, Shyampur, and Udaynarayanpur.[7]
