Jade McSorley (born 16 February 1988) is a British female model, most notable for placing third on the fifth series of Britain's Next Top Model. McSorley's place in the competition sparked major media controversy, as she had previously suffered with the eating disorder, anorexia.[1]

Britain's Next Top Model

McSorley first garnered public attention by participating in the 2009 series of Britain's Next Top Model. Her participation was controversial as she used to suffer from anorexia, and questions were raised whether she was physically and emotionally stable enough to cope with the stress of the competition. The day before the first programme of the series aired, McSorley appeared on the daytime television show This Morning to discuss her condition and defend her participation. She stated her hope of raising awareness of the dangers of her disorder to the show's viewers.[2] Jade quickly established herself as a front-runner in the show, and with the exception of the semi-finals and the first week of the finals, she was always put through to the next round as one of the top three performing girls. She won a total of 3 in-show competitions, including two in the same week at the final 4 stage.

She quickly became a fan favourite due to her consistently strong performances and likeable personality. After the second week, McSorley was never placed outside the second best photo, with the exception in eighth week when she was placed third. McSorley was eliminated from the competition in third place after making her first appearance in the Bottom 2 with eventual winner Mecia Simson. The judges stated that whilst they felt Jade had progressed massively during the competition, they still felt that she wasn't ready to handle the modelling industry, and head judge Lisa Snowdon expressed doubts that Jade would be able maintain her recovery from her disorder if she were to model full-time.[3]

After Britain's Next Top Model

McSorley signed with the Models 1 agency in London, the second non-winning BNTM contestant to be signed with that agency.

It was announced in September 2009 that Jade would front a makeover show through Living TV's upcoming online channel, starting 23 October 2009.[4]

Since the completion of the show, McSorley has modelled for Urban Outfitters, asos.com, and luxury lingerie company Tallulah Love, showcasing their vintage collection which launched in Paris in January 2010.[5]

In recent years, Mcsorley has modelled for a Swatch campaign with photographer John Rankin Waddell.[6] and was featured in a spread for Grazia Magazine. She was also the model for House of Fraser's collection Label Lab, Sony Ericsson, Bank Clothing, MyWardrobe.com, and Urban Outfitters. She has also been the face of British heritage brand Fred Perry for several seasons. She has also appeared in the pages of Vogue UK due to her distinctive personal style.[7]

McSorley returned to the Top Model franchise when she walked in a fashion show for the live final of Britain's Next Top Model series 6. She is currently signed to Touché Models in Amsterdam [8] and exclusive New York agency One Management,[9] who boasts names such as Erin O'Connor, Helena Christensen, Bar Refaeli, and singer Cassie.

Personal life

McSorley grew up in Middlesbrough with her mum April, and her stepfather Russell, who stepped in as her father when Jade was 8 months old.[10] She first started treatment for anorexia from the age of 8,[11] and went into hospital a few months before her appearance on Top Model when her weight dropped to 6 stone (38 kg).[10] Her inclusion on a major reality show was criticised as irresponsible under the suggestion it promoted an unhealthy body image for impressionable viewers. Head judge Lisa Snowdon defended McSorley's participation, stating that her run on the programme was actually helping McSorley see her own body in a more positive way.[12] McSorley was also frequently shown being told that she needed to gain weight, and after the show, she stated that following the conclusion of filming of the programme, she had gained a stone (6.4 kg) in weight.[13]

Following the conclusion of the programme, winner Mecia Simson stated that she and McSorley were moving to London together to pursue their modelling careers.
