Jörg Schilling

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jörg Schilling was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1955 and is a computer programmer mostly known as the main author of the cdrtools software suite which he actively maintains since its first release in 1996.

Schilling also worked on the Solaris Operating System and contributes to several projects (OpenSolaris, SchilliX).

Life and works

He studied originally as an electrical engineer at the Technical University of Berlin.

He is currently employed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Fraunhofer Institute Open Communication Systems (FOKUS) in Berlin, where his main project was the BerliOS open source web site,.[1]

Schilling currently maintains a POSIX-compliant tar program called star.[2] He also developed the cdrtools package of CD burning software, which includes cdrecord and the ancillary programs mkisofs and cdda2wav. Following cdrecord's relicensing to the CDDL, the suite was removed from Debian (and subsequently several other major GNU/Linux distributions) and replaced with a fork called cdrkit.[3]

Schilling was elected to the OpenSolaris Governing Board (OGB) for the 2010-2011 term,[4] however during this term the new owner of Solaris (Oracle Corporation) discontinued the community support and the OGB with Jörg Schilling collectively resigned.
