Iyengra

Iengra (Russian: Иенгра) is a village (a selo) in the Neryungrinsky District of the Sakha Republic, Russia. Population: 1,103 (2010 Census);[1]

Geography

The village is located on the Iengra River, 60 km from the city of Neryungri. The settlement of Zolotinka is located a few kilometers to the south.

History and demographics

Iengra was founded in 1926 and named after the river on which it is located. The river's name derives from an Evenk word meaning horn, referring to the river's branches reputedly resembling the antlers of a deer when seen from the local hills.

The population is mainly ethnic Evenks, with 856 of the inhabitants reporting as Evenks on the 2010 census.

Economy and infrastructure

The local economy is mainly based around reindeer herding, dishing, hunting and fur farming.

The Amur Yakutsk Mainline railway passes near the village, with a station in Zolotinka.
