Itarsi (Hindi: इटारसी) is a city in Madhya Pradesh in central India. Itarsi is in Hoshangabad District, south of the city of Hoshangabad. It is a commercial hub for agricultural goods and is famous for its railway junction. It has Ordnance Factory Itarsi of the Ordnance Factories Board which maufactures products for the Indian Armed Forces. The Bori Wildlife Sanctuary and Tawa Dam are nearby.

History

The name Itarsi derives from intt (brick) and rassi (rope) which used to be traded around the town. But now a plywood factory has replaced "intt" and "rassi." Several industries are near the town including the ordnance factory and soya oil mills.

Harishankar Parsai was born in Jamani village near Itarsi.

Geography

Itarsi is located at 22°37′N 77°45′E / 22.62°N 77.75°E / 22.62; 77.75.[1] It has an average elevation of 304 metres (997 feet).

Reservoir

Itarsi has the large Tawa reservoir. Tawa Reservoir is on the Tawa River in central India. The reservoir was formed by the construction of the Tawa Dam, which began in 1958 and was completed in 1978. The dam provides for irrigation to several thousand hectares of farming land in Hoshangabad and Harda districts. Fishing in inland water bodies such as flood plain lakes, river, estuaries and reservoirs, has an important role for rural people. Fish is an important source of protein diet of many households and generate significant income as well as provide employment opportunities.

70 percent of the 0.71 million active fishing folks in India are employed in the inland fisheries. India has a total of 19,370 reservoir units covering an area of 31, 53,366 hectares; this creates a lot of opportunities for economic development of rural people. Reservoir fisheries are classic case of Common Pool Resources (CPRS) and require comprehensive institutional arrangement that can ensure productivity of the fish resources without compromising ecological needs.

Therefore, through the case of Tawa reservoir, we are trying to understand the fisheries resource and the production scenario. Tawa reservoir has undergone operation through different management regimes and, hence, provides an opportunity to comprehend the performance of these regimes and their implications on fisheries resources. The attempt is to understand the dynamics of the fisheries resource of Tawa reservoir.

With the limited available data, we analyse the catch and stocking relationship, predator-prey relationship and also to identify the determinants that influence the productivity of the Tawa reservoir. Based on the time-series data available a model was developed to determine the production possibility of the fish resource in Tawa. Our finding suggests that among different regimes in Tawa fisheries management, the cooperative form under Tawa Matsya Sangha (TMS)'s performance is better.

Now Tawa Dam is famous for Tawa Resort which is new picnic spot which is maintained by Madhya Pradesh Tourism. There is a cruise ship here for safari. Tawa Dam (Tawa Resort)

The Project land is at Itarsi in an area of approximately 115 acres of land between National Highway No. 69 and Delhi-Mumbai Railway line next to Pawarkheda Railway Station.

The Composite Logistics Hub is designed to cover an entire range of logistics infrastructure including rail sidings for cargo and container movement, rail side warehouses, and Inland Container Depot (ICD).
