Italy. Common Good (Italia. Bene Comune, IBC) was an Italian centre-left political and electoral alliance created to stand at the 2013 Italian general election. It comprised the following parties:
- Democratic Party (Partito Democratico - PD, social-democratic), led by Pier Luigi Bersani.
- Left Ecology Freedom (Sinistra Ecologia Libertà - SEL, democratic-socialist, ecologist), led by Nichi Vendola.
- Italian Socialist Party (Partito Socialista Italiano - PSI, social-democratic), led by Riccardo Nencini.
- Democratic Centre (Centro Democratico - CD, centrist), led by Bruno Tabacci and Massimo Donadi.
Also part of the alliance were regional parties such as the South Tyrolean People's Party (in South Tyrol),[1] Trentino Tyrolean Autonomist Party (in Trentino),[2] Autonomy Liberty Participation Ecology (in Aosta Valley),[3] Moderates for Piedmont (in Piedmont), and The Megaphone list of Rosario Crocetta (in Sicily).[4] Additionally, the Greens of South Tyrol formed a local electoral pact with SEL in South Tyrol.[5]
The alliance was announced on 31 July 2012 by the Secretary of the Democratic Party Pier Luigi Bersani and officially launched on 13 October, with the signature of a common political platform.[6]
By the terms of the agreement, each party in the coalition stood separately in the 2013 general election. However, all parties agreed to support Bersani as Prime Minister. Bersani was elected as the coalition's prime ministerial candidate in the primary election held on 25 November and 2 December.[7][8][9]
In the election, the coalition gained a plurality in both houses of the Italian parliament, garnering 29.6% of the vote in the Chamber[10] and 31.6% of the vote in the Senate,[11] thus failing to have enough seats to form a government of its own. Consequently Bersani resigned from party leadership and the PD joined a grand coalition government, led by Enrico Letta.
