Isabella Janet Florentina Summers (born 31 October 1980) is an English musician, songwriter, producer, remixer and member of English indie rock band Florence and the Machine. As well as being the keyboard player for the group, Summers has five co-writing credits[1] on the critically acclaimed, BRIT Award-winning Lungs.[2] Isabella also has three co-writing credits on the album Ceremonials.

When not on tour with Florence and the Machine, Summers spends her time writing, producing and remixing tracks for an array of artists. She is also a founding member of the band The Life, The Love and The Grateful and is in the progress of co-writing and producing their debut album.

Background

With DJing as her foundation, Summers worked with Dan Greenpeace on his 'All City Show' radio show on XFM (and record label) during her time at art school. She studied fine art "the fourth dimension" at Central Saint Martins. Inspired by this experience she bought her first MPC. With this she started a studio in Crystal Palace, and began making hip hop. During this time, Summers worked with, amongst others, Kashmere The Iguana Man, IRS Crew, MBC Crew, Inja and The Last Skeptic. She then met Florence Welch and moved from producing underground UK rap artists to writing and producing songs with her. The name of Florence and the Machine is attributed to Summers and Welch's collaboration. Welch and Summers performed together for a time under the name Florence Robot/Isa Machine. According to Welch, "The name Florence and the Machine started off as a private joke that got out of hand. I made music with my friend, who we called Isabella Machine to which I was Florence Robot. When I was about an hour away from my first gig, I still didn't have a name, so I thought 'Okay, I'll be Florence Robot/Isa Machine', before realising that name was so long it'd drive me mad."[3]
