Ironton is an unincorporated community in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana 29°38′55″N 89°57′41″E / 29.64861°N 89.96139°E / 29.64861; 89.96139 (29.648N, -89.961 O.)[1]

It is on the west bank of the Mississippi River, between Louisiana Highway 23 and the River. The community has been historically mostly African-American. During the reign of segregationist Plaquemines Parish boss Leander Perez (and continuing under his immediate successors) Ironton was denied development granted to White communities in the area; Ironton had no running water until 1980, and that only after stories of the residents demand for running water had been publicized by Time Magazine and 60 Minutes.[2]

Like most of the area, Ironton was devastated by Hurricane Katrina and its resulting storm surge in 2005.
