Iron Beam (Hebrew: קֶרֶן בַּרְזֶל, Keren Barzel) is an air defense system currently in development by Israeli defense contractor Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.[1] Expected to be unveiled at the 2014 Singapore Air Show (February 11[2]) and enter service with the Israel Defense Forces in 2015, the system is designed to destroy short-range rockets, artillery and mortar bombs too small for Iron Dome to efficiently intercept.[1] In addition, the system could also intercept unmanned aerial vehicles.[3] Iron Beam will use a "directed high energy laser beam" to destroy hostile targets with ranges of up to 7 kilometres (4.3 mi).[1][4] Iron Dome will constitute the fifth element of Israel's integrated air defense system,[1] in addition to Arrow 2 and 3, David's Sling and Iron Dome.[5] However, Iron Beam is also a stand-alone system.[3]
