From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ireland commonly refers to:

Political map of Ireland showing Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland
  • Ireland, an island in northwestern Europe, and the countries located on it:
    • Republic of Ireland or Ireland, a sovereign state that comprises most of the island (also Éire when writing in Irish)
    • Northern Ireland, a constituent country of the United Kingdom that comprises the north-eastern sixth of the island

The island was formerly subject to a number of political arrangements (arranged in reverse chronological order):

  • Irish Free State, the name, from 1922 to 1937, of the dominion comprising briefly all of Ireland and thereafter 26 of the island's 32 counties
  • Irish Republic, an unrecognised independent state declared between 1919 and 1922
  • Southern Ireland, the name, from 1921 to 1922, of a 26-county constituent country of the United Kingdom established on the same day as Northern Ireland
  • United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, the name of the state of which Ireland formed a part between 1801 and 1922
  • Kingdom of Ireland, the name given to the Irish state from 1541 to 1801
  • Lordship of Ireland, a nominally all-island Irish state created in the wake of the Norman invasion of the east coast of Ireland in 1169
  • Gaelic Ireland, the political order that existed in Ireland before the Norman invasion
