Indrajit Lankesh (Kannada: ಇಂದ್ರಜಿತ್ ಲಂಕೇಶ್) (born 22 September 1976) is an Indian film director and a Tabloid Publisher. He has worked in Kannada films as a director. He is known for his stylish and glamorous portrayal of the subjects he picks up for direction. He is also a publisher for the famous Kannada weekly Tabloid, Lankesh Patrike which was founded by his father, P. Lankesh.

Family Background

Lankesh comes from a prominent family of journalists and media publishers. His father P. Lankesh founded the highly successful weekly tabloid Lankesh Patrike. His sister Kavita Lankesh is an acclaimed film maker and his other sister Gauri Lankesh was the chief editor of the tabloid.[1]

Career

Lankesh began his career as a director for the film Thuntata in the year 2002.[2] This Aniruddh - Rekha Vedavyas- Chaya Singh starrer was an adaptation of Bollywood film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Lankesh won the Best Debutant director award from Karnataka State for this film.[3] Following the success of Thuntata, Lankesh came up with a real life incident based film Lankesh Patrike named after his father's tabloid agency. Darshan and singer-turned-actor Vasundhara Das featured in this film which was not well received by the critics and masses.

In 2004, Lankesh directed the hugely successful film Monalisa starring Dhyan and Sadha in the lead roles. This film brought him to the limelight again and he received several awards including the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Film. The film was one of the first Kannada films to be screened in the Multiplexes.[4] He planned to direct a Bollywood film Shaadi Ke After Effects with Dhyan, which did not materialize due to budget issues.

In 2006, he directed another much hyped film Aishwarya starring Upendra in the lead. This was the debut film for the Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone. The film opened to full houses and collected Rs.2 Crores in the first week of its release.[5] Following this success, Lankesh tried his hands on the Bollywood project named Black Diamond with Shiney Ahuja in the lead.

After battling the case, Lankesh returned to movies. He directed back-to-back commercial potboilers like Thunta Thunti and Huduga Hudugi again with Dhyan in the lead role. He introduced actress Lekha Washington to the Kannada cinema with the latter venture. Actresses Sadha and Ileana made special appearances in the same film. Both the films fared average at the box-office.

Currently, Lankesh is working on the upcoming Diganth, Charmee Kaur starrer Dev Son of Mudde Gowda venture.
