Members Gabriela and Mihaela Modorcea

Indiggo is the stage name of the identical twin sisters Gabriela and Mihaela Modorcea. Together they are professional actresses, singers, writers, and songwriters. Mihaela and Gabriela Modorcea are citizens of the United States of America ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-srfcVy_CI ) and live in New York City, where they have been working on a great project. The roots of their family are in Transylvania,[1] and they are also known as Dracula's Girls (New York Times) or LOLITAS from Dracula's Land (Popcorn, Germany). Their father, Grid, is a prolific writer and TV producer[2] and their mother Violeta is a teacher of world literature.[3][4]

Career

General

Gabriela is the producer and arranger of Indiggo's music, while Mihaela is the poet, lyricist, and fashion designer. Both twins majored in acting, graduating with honors from the National University of Theatrical Arts and Cinematography (UNATC). They played the leads in the award-winning musical The Two Orphans at Bucharest in 2006.[5] After having seen Mihaela and Gabriela playing in The Two Orphans, Romanian author D. R. Popescu wrote a play for them entitled Two Sisters, subsequently published in the award-winning collection of plays Domnul Fluture si Doamna Fluture.[6] Indiggo have also appeared in the musical The Future is in Eggs by Eugène Ionesco and in the musical America Alive. They have been nicknamed the “Lolitas from Dracula Land” (Popcorn), “Double Marvel Voices” (Express), “Fireworks full of life, erotism and talent” (Bild). After graduation, they attended an acting course in Koln, Germany, then moved to New York where they studied acting with the American actor Paul Sorvino.

Mihaela and Gabriela's compositions are inspired by the Romanian folklore and their quality has led those who heard them consider the Indiggo Twins "ambassadors of the great Romanian tradition" (as seen in Jay-Z and Kanye West Watch The Throne' s booklet).

A number of top music producers have written for or with the Indiggo Twins, including Swizz Beatz (Beyoncé, Jay-Z), Rockwilder (Christina Aguilera), Peter Zizzo (Celine Dion, Avril Lavigne), Paul Oakenfold (Madonna).

Mihaela and Gabriela are members of ASCAP. They are represented by Creative Artists Agency (CAA) which is developing a TV project starring the twins, based on Mihaela's novel "Wicked Clone".

Mihaela and Gabriela were introduced to music at the age of 6, and have continued taking piano, guitar, canto, and dancing lessons since then.[7] They started performing at the age of 12, and have been continuously featured in the European media since then.[8] They speak English, French, German, and Romanian and can sing in seven different languages. The twins music was released Europe-wide by Sony BMG, reaching the top of the charts as Mihaela and Gabriela have regularly performed on German and European TV shows and received media support from Bild.[9]

Sony BMG Germany wrote about Indiggo: "Germany is proud when the twins Mihaela and Gabriela are in the country. No wonder; the 22 year-old twin sisters Indiggo do not only look like international models, they are also blessed with considerable musical talent."[10] German TV personality and musician Dieter Bohlen said in the European newspaper Bild: “The Indiggo twins have sensational voices and a very strong will to succeed. I have seen lots of young artists in the music business, but not even 3% have their enthusiasm. Show me other twins as gorgeous.”[11]

Indiggo’s first album was produced by MediaPro Music in 2000. Their first Europe-wide single "Hip Hop Jam" – a catchy Latino song with Cuban influences – topped the charts in several countries, including Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, Indiggo's songs having been featured on compilations in over 20 countries.[12] Following which, Indiggo's "Be My Boyfriend" was produced and released by Sony BMG and Dieter Bohlen.[13] In 2008, Indiggo qualified for the semi-finals of America's Got Talent.

On June 21, 2011, Mihaela and Gabriela had the premiere of their theatre show entitled "Wicked Clone" at the Ensemble Studio Theatre, Manhattan, New York. The show was entirely written, composed, arranged, choreographed and performed by Mihaela and Gabriela. "Wicked Clone" was a great success; in the end of the show Mihaela and Gabriela received and signed a publishing deal with Imagem Music on spot: http://tunes.broadwayworld.com/article/Imagem-Music-Signs-The-Indiggo-Twins-20110810

TV and film appearances

Gabriela guest-starred on the episode "Hothouse" of the television series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which first aired on NBC on January 13, 2009.[14][15] Gabriela also appears as Taj's sister in the National Lampoon's Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj.[16]

Mihaela and Gabriela appeared together in the 2009 Russian/American film No Love In The City.[17][18] The twins guest starred on The Tyra Banks Show, on TMZ (FOX), The Happy Hour (FOX Business) and “Hair Battle Spectacular” (Oxygen). They have also performed in TV commercials for Dell Computers, the NY Knicks, and Vodka Gorbatschow, and in music videos with other artists such as Lindsay Lohan, 50 Cent, and Kanye West.[19][20][21]

Books

Mihaela, the five-minutes older twin sister, will publish this year her first novel in the US.[22] In 2006, she published her first book of poetry, Rage and Love, and was acclaimed as one of the most original poetesses in her native country.[23] Reviewing Mihaela’s poems, journalist Dorin Grigore wrote:

“Reading this book, it’s impossible not to ask God: Oh, Lord, who could ever rise to the love this girl offers? This divine chemistry through which rage turns into love is amazing and overwhelming. ... Mihaela Modorcea creates a visionary landscape of ideas, full of passion, carnal force, and great power. ... Mihaela Modorcea reinvents language itself, in that she looks for the “other” way of naming things, as Plato said in his Cratylus dialogue. ... In Mihaela Modorcea’s verses there lies a theatricality of Shakespearean origin, an air of northern poetry, a steam from Ibsen and Strindberg; her verses are a leaven of Puck's fantasy...” [24]

Grid Modorcea wrote a biography of the sisters, entitled Indiggo Twins and telling their life story from his perspective as a writer, film maker and critic.[25]
