Monson on October 2, 2010, during the church's semi-annual general conference.[1][3] The temple was announced concurrently with the Hartford Connecticut, Tijuana Mexico, Urdaneta Philippines and Lisbon Portugal temples. It will be the first temple constructed in Indiana.

The Indianapolis Indiana Temple is expected be similar The Gila Valley Arizona Temple, a single-level temple with an end spire and to encompass approximately 22–23,000 square feet.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held September 29, 2012[4][5][6] with Donald L. Hallstrom presiding.[7]
