The Impetuoso class were the first post war destroyers built for the Italian Navy. The hull design was based on the uncompleted Comandante class destroyers but American equipment (guns, radar, machinery) was used. A scheme to install guided missiles during a modernisation programme was proposed but not carried out. The two ships were ordered in 1952,entered service in 1957 and were retired in the early 1980s.
