Ilan Boccara (born 14 May 1993 in Boulogne-Billancourt, France) is a Dutch-French professional football player, currently playing as a defensive midfielder for Ligue 1 team Evian, on loan from Dutch side Ajax and the Netherlands national U-19 team.

Club career

Early career

Born in Boulogne-Billancourt, France to a Dutch mother, and a French father,[2] Ilan Boccara joined the local ES16, a club from the XVIe arrondissement of Paris, at the age of six. After just one season, he transferred to Stade Français, to play for Athletic Club de Boulogne-Billancourt for the next five years. By the time he was thirteen years, Boccara was discovered by scouts of Paris Saint-Germain, who recruited him to the Academy of the top French club.[3]

Paris Saint-Germain

Ilan Boccara joined the youth ranks of PSG at the age of thirteen. After passing through various stages of the youth system, he developed well, and was promoted to the reserve squad of the club during the 2010–11 Ligue 1 season. Boccara was promoted to the second string of PSG, the highest level of youth football at the Parisian club, playing in the CFA league.

His first season playing for PSG II, Boccara had to get used to playing at the highest level of youth football in France at the age of 17, and spent most of the time on the bench, however the following season, in 2010–11, he played in 28 matches, starting in 26 of them. It was because of his great performance during his second season with the B team of Paris Saint-Germain, that Boccara was called up for the Netherlands U-19 team.

In the meantime Paris Saint-Germain was purchased by Qatar Sports Investments in 2011, resulting in a large capacity to spend money on players. The new Qatari owning company invested millions into the Parisian club, bringing star footballers to the capital city. However well Boccara performed with PSG II during the 2011–12 season, there was little potential for playing time in the A-selection, with the arrival of the new players, so instead of Boccara remaining in Paris, he decided for a transfer to AFC Ajax in the Netherlands instead, moving to his mother's hometown of Amsterdam, and with higher potential of playing time.

AFC Ajax

A youth product of Paris Saint-Germain, Boccara signed with Ajax in the summer of 2012. Having started the season with Jong Ajax, Ilan Boccara was promoted to the first team selection in late August 2012, making his first Eredivisie appearance in the away match against SC Heerenveen, coming on as a substitute in the 77th minute for Lasse Schöne, with the match ending in a 2–2 draw.[4]

Evian (loan)

On 2 September 2013 it was announced that Ilan Boccara would be loaned to French Ligue 1 side Evian Thonon Gaillard, the former club of his Ajax teammate Christian Poulsen on a season long loan spell until the summer of 2014.[5]
