Iganga District is a district in Eastern Uganda. Like most other Ugandan districts, it is named after its 'chief town', Iganga, where the district headquarters are located.
Location
Iganga District is bordered by Kaliro District to the north, Namutumba District to the northeast, Bugiri District to the east, Mayuge District to the south, Jinja District to the southwest and Luuka District to the west.[1] The district headquarters at Iganga are located approximately 44 kilometres (27 mi), by road, northeast of Jinja, the largest city in Busoga sub-region.[2] The coordinates of the district are:00 36N, 33 30E (Latitude:0.6000; Longitude:33.5000).
Overview
The district is situated in southeastern Uganda, about 25 kilometres (16 mi) to the north of Lake Victoria. Iganga District lies at an altitude of about 1,138 metres (3,734 ft) above sea level and just north of the Equator. The district is bisected by the main highway through East Africa from Kenya to the Ugandan capital Kampala and the Central African countries of Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Iganga district is part of Busoga sub-region, home to an estimated 2.5 million people in 2002, according to the national census.
Population
The 2002 national census estimated the population of the district at about 335,500.[3] The annual population growth rate in the district was estimated at 2.8%. It is estimated that the population of the district in 2010 was approximately 481,700. See table below:

LanguageIganga District lies within Busoga sub-region, which is coterminous with the Kingdom of Busoga, one of the monarchies in modern Uganda. The traditional language of Busoga is the Lusoga language, which is still extensively used. Lusoga is a Bantu language, very closely related to Luganda, which is widely used in the Central Uganda and in the media. Central Uganda is coterminous with the Buganda Kingdom, the largest constitutional monarchy in modern Uganda EconomyIganga District is primarily a rural district, and the chief town is not yet a tourist destination, as is Jinja 44 kilometres (27 mi) to the west. The majority of people in Iganga District are subsistence farmers. The surplus produce finds ready market locally in the urban areas and in neighboring area markets.
