Hydnocarpus venenata is a species of plant in the Achariaceae family. It is endemic to Sri lanka. It is threatened by habitat loss. This species has been included as a Mozambican species on the basis of its presence in the Preliminary Mozambican checklist. However there is no species of this name in the Sub-Saharan checklist.
Leaves
lanceolate, tapered base, subacute apex, margins serrate, pubescent on veins beneath.
Trunk
Bark- smooth, whitish; Wood- hard, yellow; young shoots pubescent.
Flowers
male flowers brownish white, solitary or in 2's, axillary, densely pubescent. Inflorescence - female small, crowded, short, axillary panicles.
Fruits
globose; tomentose berry with a blunt beak.
Ecology
Riverine forest canopy; along water courses in rain forest. Found in dry lowlands, intermediate forests and wet forests of Sri Lanka.
Uses
fruits- fish poison. seeds- medicinal.
In culture
Hydnocarpus venenata is known as "Makulu" or "Makula" in Sinhala.
