Hunspell is a spell checker and morphological analyzer designed for languages with rich morphology and complex word compounding and character encoding, originally designed for the Hungarian language.
Hunspell is based on MySpell and is backward-compatible with MySpell dictionaries. While MySpell uses a single-byte character encoding, Hunspell can use Unicode UTF-8-encoded dictionaries.
Uses
Hunspell is the spell checker of:
- Apple's Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and later
- Apache Solr 3.5 and later
- Eclipse, using Hunspell4Eclipse
- Google Chrome, a freeware web browser developed by Google[1]
- InDesign, Adobe's page layout software, since CS5.5[2]
- Evernote, note taking software.
- LibreOffice and OpenOffice.org, open source office suites (starting with version 2.0.2, March 8, 2006)
- LyX, a document processor
- Mozilla products Firefox and Thunderbird (both starting with version 3), and SeaMonkey (starting with version 2)
- Novell Groupwise starting in version 2012 [3]
- SDL Trados Studio world-leading software for computer-assisted translation by SDL
- OmegaT, an open-source computer-assisted translation tool
- Opera 10+, a cross-platform web browser and internet suite.
- Scribus desktop publishing (DTP) application, since 1.4.2[4]
- SoftMaker Office (in addition to its built-in spell checker), a cross-platform office suite
- The Bat! email client by RITLABS S.R.L. since version 4.0
- Vim, a text editor
- WinShell, an integrated development environment (IDE) for TeX and LaTeX on Windows
- XTuple, a cross-platform enterprise resource planning application
- XMetaL, an XML authoring application (in addition to its built-in spell checker that supports 30 languages)
- Yudit, a Unicode text editor for the X Window System
Moreover, Hunspell is supported by Enchant and Emacs.
Hunspell is free software, distributed under the terms of a GPL, LGPL and MPL tri-license. Hunspell has ports or wrappers for the major platforms and programming languages such as Java,[5] Perl,[6] Python,[7].NET,[8] Lua,[9] and a lite version for JavaScript.[10]
