Hulbert is a town in Cherokee County, Oklahoma, United States, named after Ben H. Hulbert, a prominent Cherokee Indian.[3] The population was 590 at the 2010 census, an increase of 8.7 percent from 543 at the 2000 census.[4] Our Lady of the Annunciation of Clear Creek Monastery is a Benedictine Monastery located in Hulbert. The Clear Creek Monastery, recently elevated to the status of an Abbey, is a foundation Abbey of France's Notre Dame de Fontgombault, which is itself a foundation Abbey of Saint Pierre de Solesmes, also in France.
Geography
Hulbert is located at 35°55′54″N 95°8′34″W / 35.93167°N 95.14278°W (35.931562, -95.142642)[5].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 9.0 square miles (23 km2), all of it land.
Demographics
As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 543 people, 214 households, and 148 families residing in the town. The population density was 572.1 people per square mile (220.7/km²). There were 245 housing units at an average density of 258.1 per square mile (99.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 44.94% White, 47.15% Native American, and 7.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.18% of the population.
There were 214 households out of which 36.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.1% were married couples living together, 20.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% were non-families. 26.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.01.
In the town the population was spread out with 29.8% under the age of 18, 12.3% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 29 years. For every 100 females there were 82.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $19,886, and the median income for a family was $24,063. Males had a median income of $23,333 versus $19,107 for females. The per capita income for the town was $9,508. About 23.7% of families and 26.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.7% of those under age 18 and 34.4% of those age 65 or over.
Community
Annual benefit,Shade Tree Car Show. The car show is held on the last Saturday of June in Hulbert Oklahoma city park. The proceeds from the car show go to the Eric Truitt Memorial Car Show Fund and is given to a senior at HPS in the form of a scholarship.
Best known for its reputation of being a speed trap, Hulbert also boasts being the headquarters for more than one thriving business.
NeoHealth—Northeastern Oklahoma Community Health Centers, Inc. is a Community Health Center headquartered in Hulbert, that operates 5 clinics: Hulbert Health Center in Hulbert, Tahlequah Health Center and NeoHealth OB/GYN Associates both located in Tahlequah, Westville Family Medical Center, located in Westville, and NeoHealth Muskogee located in Muskogee. NeoHealth also opened a pharmacy in Hulbert in April 2012.
Lake Region Electric Cooperative—LREC provides electricity to most of Cherokee and surrounding counties.
