Hugh is a common English name for males.

Origins

Following the Norman Invasion in 1066, several French names the conquerors brought with them became popular, especially among the upper and middle class of English society. Hugh is a variant form of the French name Hugues. The current spelling Hugh in English is from the Picard variant spelling Hughes, where -gh- is similar to French -gu- = [g]. -gu- or -gh- avoid the wrong pronunciation [yʒe] in Modern French. However, the present English pronunciation [hju:] is influenced by the Norman variant form Hue ([hy:], [y:]), now only surname mainly from Normandy.[1] In turn, the French variant ultimately derives from an Old Low Franconian given name based on the Germanic element hug meaning "heart", "mind", "spirit".[2] Modern Dutch variant Huig (as in Huig de Groot) retains more of the original form. Because of a number of humanist intellectuals as well as French monarchs (Hugh Capet) bearing the name in the past, the name is also frequent (especially in western Europe) in its Latin form Hugo. Apart from this, Hugh is also used as an Anglicisation of the Gaelic names Aodh and Ùisdean.[3]
