House of Night is a series of vampire-themed fantasy novels by American author P. C. Cast and her daughter Kristin Cast. It follows the fictional adventures of Zoey Redbird, a sixteen-year-old girl who has just become a "fledgling vampyre" and is required to attend the House of Night boarding school in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Books in the series have been on the New York Times Best Seller list for 63 weeks^[3] and have sold over seven million copies in North America,^[4] and more than ten million books worldwide, in 39 countries.^[5][6] The series, published by St Martin's Press, is planned to include twelve books.^[7] Plans for a film adaptation was announced in 2008.^{[citation needed]}

The sixth novel in the series, Tempted, went on sale in October, 2009 with a first printing of a million copies,^[8] entered the USA Today bestseller list that week at #1.^[9] In January, 2010, Gezeichnet, a German translation of Marked, reached the #1 spot on the Der Spiegel bestseller list.^[10] The seventh novel, Burned, was released on April 27, 2010,^[11] and like Tempted, entered the USA Today bestseller list at #1.^[12] Awakened, released in January, 2011, also entered the list at #1.^[13]

The tenth book in the series, Hidden, was released on October 16, 2012. The second book in the novellas (which give backgrounds on supporting characters), Lenobia's Vow, was released January 31, 2012. Book eleven is currently called Revealed, and the Casts have announced that two more novellas, Neferet’s Curse, planned to be released February 19, 2013, and a prequel novel about Kalona, are to be released to coincide with the eleventh and twelfth books.

The Vampire World

(NOTE: Instead of vampire, the authors use the variant spelling vampyre throughout the book series. This convention is also applied to the words vampyric and vampyrism.)

In the fictional world of House of Night, a small percentage of the world's teenagers are changed into vampires when adolescent hormones trigger a strand of what is otherwise junk DNA.^[14] The change from human to vampire takes four years, during which time the adolescents, known as "fledglings," must attend one of the "House of Night" boarding schools.^[15] While there, they are required to take the Vampire Sociology 101 course to learn the dangers they face.^[16] If a fledgling is not in constant proximity to adult vampyres, the fledgling will die; so the fledglings rarely leave the school. About one in ten fledglings die anyway, since their bodies cannot tolerate the Change. For those who survive, there's a big reward: in the words of one of the authors, "Vampires are like Superman. They’re super-gorgeous. They’re super-talented. They’re super-men."^[17]

Vampires and fledglings are not destroyed by sunlight, as in many vampire novels, but it is painful to them, so classes at the House of Night are held at night.^[18] Fledglings are marked by a sapphire blue crescent-shaped outline on their foreheads; when they become full-fledged vampires, this mark becomes solid and they receive more 'tattoos' which extend over their cheeks (these usually represent some personality aspect; for instance, Zoey's equestrian teacher, Lenobia, has tattoos that look like horses.) Zoey is the only fledgling to receive a filled-in mark and tattoos. As she defeats evil her tattoos extend over her shoulders, down to her lower back, around her waist, down her arms and palms, and across her chest. Older fledglings and adult vampires need to drink small quantities of human blood, but House of Night vampires do not attack humans to get it. The taking of blood is pleasurable for both human and vampire, and may lead to a strong bond, called "Imprinting" between the two. When an imprint is broken, it causes major pain between the vampire and human.

Some of the issues that Zoey and her friends face are not covered in Vampyre Sociology 101. They are issues faced by real-life human teenagers. Zoey keeps some secrets from her friends and gets in trouble with them, forcing her to consider the nature of friendship. Kristin Cast said that these moral dilemmas were included because "those are issues teenagers deal with." She continued, "We're not afraid to discuss things that are actually happening."^[19] As it happens, this kind of exploration of human nature and identity, its meaning, essence and boundaries, form a subtext to most contemporary vampire novels.^[20] "The point we wanted to make," said author P.C. Cast, "is acceptance and tolerance and also that teenagers can make mistakes and recover from them."^[17] While these issues might not be discussed in the Vampyre Sociology class, they form a backdrop to the novel.

Religion in House of Night

The House of Night series is filled with religion. The House of Night religion is, in the words of P.C. Cast, "heavily pagan and Wiccan based, with a huge influx of Native American myth and legend".^[19] Within vampyre society, the primary Goddess is a benevolent female named Nyx, who, at the beginning of the series, appears to Zoey and tells her that she will be Nyx's agent in the House of Night. Vampyres and fledglings cast a magic circle to communicate with Nyx or to harness the power of the elements: air, fire, water, earth, and spirit. Some demons from Cherokee mythology also play an important part in later volumes, and the Raven Mockers ^[21] and Tsi Sgili^[22] are taken from real Cherokee legends.^[23]

Outside in the human world, the "People of Faith" is a fictional Protestant religion that is highly intolerant of anything else but their own beliefs. (In an interview, P.C. Cast said that she modeled the People of Faith on the worst fanatics of all religions, not just Protestantism.^[24]) Catholicism also plays an important role in the later novels, with the fledglings joining forces with Catholic nuns against Kalona.

The religious ambiance gives House of Night a strong moral perspective^[25] as it is often enforced that Nyx gives vampyres and humans free will.^[26] This theme takes special prominence in Tempted, where Zoey discovers that, although she is the reincarnation of a woman created to love Kalona, she has the power to choose whether she will follow her previous incarnation's path or reject it.^[27] One of the characters dies because Zoey makes the wrong choice.^[28] Also, in Burned, a Manichaen view of the Universe is presented, in which Good battles Evil: forces of Light combat forces of Darkness and characters must choose which side to be on. Also, the black and white bull are presented.^[29] In Awakened, the theme of love is presented, in which love must battle Darkness, and life is really only, always, about love.

The Bulls

As noted above, a black bull, known as Light, and a white bull, Darkness, are introduced in Burned. The bulls were not accepted into vampyre society because this was too masculine, and vampyre society is heavily matriarchal.^[30] Their counter intuitive colorings are said to signify that each possesses something that the other wants. The bulls often take a price, or a debt, from those who ask them for favors. When Stevie Rae accidentally calls the white bull forth, he answers her question, giving Stark passage to the Otherworld. In return, he drinks from her. When Stevie Rae calls the black bull forth to get rid of the white bull, the black bull makes her swear an oath that she will have a connection to Rephaim. It is noted by Aphrodite that if the white bull kills the black bull, the world will fall. The white bull has intervened many times in the series, always helping Neferet in her plans. He becomes her Consort, but his true plan is to destroy, and consume, the black bull. He will use anyone to do that, and destroy anyone as well.

The setting

The series is set in Tulsa, in a small and reclusive part of Midtown. The House of Night campus is in the real life campus of Cascia Hall, and the climactic scene of the first book in the series takes place in the extensive gardens of the Philbrook Museum. Zoey sometimes sneaks off-campus to the elegant shops of nearby Utica Square, and several important confrontations take place in Utica Square's Starbucks coffee shop. Some of the novels' most dramatic scenes take place in a catacomb-like network of tunnels under downtown Tulsa built by bootleggers during Prohibition; though a few such tunnels do indeed exist,^[31] and can be visited,^[32] they are far less extensive than the tunnels described by Cast. The abandoned Art Deco train depot where the tunnels begin, however, is real.^[33] and is slated to become a concert hall^[34] The location of Aphrodite's parents' mansion, South 27th Place, is a real street, though the mansion itself is fictional. Though Aphrodite's father, Mr. LaFont, the very rich and old mayor of Tulsa, has a name similar to the former, very rich, mayor of Tulsa Bill LaFortune, his character is very different, and the author has stressed that her fictional mayor is indeed fictional.^[35] The Benedictine convent to which Zoey and her friends flee.^[36] is real; it is called St. Joseph Monastery.^[37] And the devastating ice storm through which they flee was based on a real ice storm that hit Tulsa in December 2007.^[38] The climactic scene in Tempted takes place far from Tulsa, on San Clemente Island near Venice, which in real life called Isola di San Clemente and is part of the small island around Venice. The church at which the Vampyre High Council meets was built in 1131.^[39]

Much of Burned takes place on the Inner Hebrides island of Skye, in the palace of Sgiach, the Vampyre queen. According to Scottish tradition, Sgiach (usually spelled Sgathach) was a princess many centuries ago who ran the best warrior training school in Scotland.^[40] Princess Sgathach lived in Dunscaith Castle, which is today a ruin. (Seoras Wallace, the doughty Scottish historian who provided P.C. Cast with a background on Scottish mythology, became her boyfriend, and the Burned character of Sgiach's consort is modelled on him.^[41])

Marked

Sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird lives in a world where vampyres have always existed. New vampyres, called fledglings, appear through a biological process known as "Marking" that takes place in some humans at puberty and lasts four years. At the beginning of the book, Zoey is at school when she is Marked by a Tracker. As the news spreads, she is quickly deserted by her friends and close family, who are part of an anti-vampyre religion. Knowing what she has to do, Zoey drives to her grandmother's house for help, but is accidentally knocked unconscious while trying to find her. She encounters a meeting with the Greek Goddess Nyx of Night, before she regains consciousness.

Zoey wakes up at the House of Night in the presence of her grandmother and the vampyre headmaster- her future mentor, Neferet. Zoey finds out that her Mark is all filled in, like that of an adult vampyre, a sign of the goddess' favor. There she quickly befriends her roommate, Stevie Rae, and through her, Damien, Erin and Shaunee. Zoey discovers that she has affinities for the five elements, air, fire, earth, water, and spirit, the first person to do so in vampyre history.

Because of her uniqueness, Zoey also attracts the attention of the High Priestess in training, Aphrodite. To humiliate her, Aphrodite invites her to a Dark Daughters ritual where she tricks her into drinking blood. Embarrassed, Zoey flees. Shortly afterwards, Zoey finds a disillusioned Heath (her "ex-almost-boyfriend") and Kayla (her ex-best friend) climbing over the campus wall, trying to bust her out. When it becomes clear that Kayla has been flirting with Heath, Zoey threatens her; Kayla is frightened and leaves. Zoey scratches Heath accidentally and drinks from him; they Imprint. Soon after Heath leaves, she meets Erik Night, Aphrodite's ex-boyfriend, and they quickly become close friends.

Zoey is invited back to the Dark Daughters and Sons' Samhain celebration, where they try to honor the spirits with some blood. A drunk Heath stumbles upon the scene and tries to bring Zoey back with him, disturbing the ritual. Aphrodite cannot control the malevolent spirits she summons, and her circle deserts her. Zoey steps in with her friends; using her newfound abilities, she stops the spirits. Neferet, who happens to witness everything, takes Aphrodite's status as leader of the Dark Daughters and Sons and gives it to Zoey instead.

Betrayed

At her first parent visitation, Zoey is reunited with her family for the first time in a month. She joyously welcomes her grandmother, but is saddened to notice the stiffness of her parents. Neferet comes upon their meeting and is almost immediately engaged in a religious dispute by Zoey's stepfather. In the ensuing argument, Zoey's parents vow never to come to the House of Night again, and Neferet kicks them out.

The same night, Zoey witnesses Aphrodite being verbally abused by her parents and starts developing sympathy for her enemy. Later on, she chances upon Neferet scolding Aphrodite and is shocked by this new side of her mentor. That day, Neferet invites Zoey for a private dinner. Upon hearing that Zoey saw her and Aphrodite, she informs her that Aphrodite's visions were no longer valid, as Nyx had withdrawn her gift, and advises Zoey to keep her distance.

Later on, while watching TV, Zoey learns of the death of one of the high school football players whom she knew and goes on a walk to clear her head. She chances upon a crying Aphrodite who claims to have had another vision that included Zoey's grandmother. She asks for a favor for her help and asks Zoey to take an oath. Unwilling to risk her grandmother's life, she accepts and learns that Aphrodite has seen her grandmother in a car, stuck on a collapsing local bridge, at a precise time. Zoey calls her grandmother to tell her to stay at home and then she and her friends make a call to the police about a bomb on the bridge, to keep other people away from it, around the time it was set to fall. Aphrodite's vision turns out to be true, making Zoey begin to doubt Neferet.

When two football players from Union (Zoey's old school's district rivals) disappear and are found murdered, she begins to suspect Neferet has something to do with it, especially after witnessing her discussing the murders with "undead", supposedly deceased student, Elliott. Meanwhile, Zoey must make decisions regarding her love life, as she is drawn to ex-boyfriend Heath due to their Imprint, maintains a relationship with Erik, and captures the interest of Poet Laureate and teacher Loren Blake.

Zoey reorganizes the Dark Daughters, now that she is in charge of them. Shortly after her first ritual in charge, her best friend Stevie Rae rejects the Change and dies. As Zoey grieves over Stevie Rae, she learns that Heath too has disappeared, following the two other murders. Using her Imprint, she is able to locate him and takes off to retrieve him.

She finds out that Heath is being held captive by "undead" fledglings. Using her elemental affinities, Zoey frees Heath, but also finds out that it was Neferet who changed the dying fledglings into the "undead" creatures- one of which is Stevie Rae. The fledglings had lost their humanity and reverted to an almost feral state. She runs away with Heath, vowing to return. In the tunnels just before detective marx arrives, Neferet attempts to erase Zoey's memory, but Zoey recovers her memory using her gift in the five elements, and starts hatching a plan to help her former best friend.

Chosen

The book opens on December 24, Zoey's birthday. Much to her dismay, all of her friends buy her Christmas-themed presents.

The school is shaken by drama teacher Patricia Nolan's death. Zoey and Aphrodite find her crucified with a quote from the Bible next to her, which leads Zoey to believe that the People of Faith are responsible and spurs Neferet to strengthen school security. Set to clear out her romantic life, Zoey sneaks out of the House of Night, resolving to break up with Heath - but she has little success. On the way back Zoey meets Stevie Rae and, together with Aphrodite, brings her to the latter's parents' house, keeping her there while trying to find a solution to the problem.

Back at the House of Night, Zoey realizes that, as a leader of the Dark Daughters, she has to chose someone else to fill the position of Earth (once held by Stevie Rae) in her circle. Much to everyone's displeasure, Zoey chooses Aphrodite when she manifests a new Earth affinity.

Zoey also feels more and more estranged from Erik because of the lies she tells to hide her flirtation with Loren. On the night Erik completes the Change, Zoey loses her virginity to Loren and Imprints with him, breaking her previous one with Heath. Erik walks in on them and angrily breaks up with Zoey. She pulls herself together and leaves to gather her friends, planning to tell them about Stevie Rae so they can cast a circle and heal her. On the way, Zoey chances upon Loren and Neferet and hears him confess that Neferet had made him seduce Zoey in order to alienate her from her closest friends and that he actually loves Neferet.

Heartbroken, Zoey leaves to get Damien, the Twins and Aphrodite. She had planned to use the occasion to cure Stevie Rae and introduce her to her friends. Because of Loren's meddling, Stevie Rae arrives before Zoey has the chance to explain her to her friends and they feel betrayed, but agree to finish the ritual. When Zoey is about to invoke Earth, Stevie Rae attacks Aphrodite in a fit of jealousy and drinks blood from her, Changing into the first red adult vampyre. Aphrodite is terrified to discover that her own mark has disappeared and runs away through the secret exit with Stevie Rae following her, leaving Zoey alone with the rest of her friends. Zoey does her best to explain and she manages to get her friends to listen until Erik shows up and reveals her infidelity and her relationship with Loren. This shatters Damien and the Twins' last bit of faith in her.

On the way back Zoey is seized by a series of spasms and finds out much later that they came from her Imprint with Loren breaking as he was killed in the same manner as Professor Nolan. Acting from apparent grief at his loss, Neferet declares war on all humans. Zoey realizes that Neferet is lost to sense, pulls herself together, and faces Neferet down after the Council meeting. During the confrontation Zoey begins to doubt herself. When she is unsure if she is strong enough to stand against Neferet on her own, she feels the strength of her elements and the tingle of her new marks and is confident in Nyx and the power she has been given. Afterwards, she heads to her dorm and finds that Erik witnessed her exchange with Neferet. He wants to believe her, but is still hurt because of Zoey cheating on him. Tiredly, with Nala in tow, Zoey heads to bed, but not before hearing her goddess whisper, "Believe in yourself, Daughter, and get ready for what is to come."

Untamed

Several days after the events of Chosen, Zoey is hiding in the stables with her horse, Persephone. After an internal debate she finally decides to talk with her friends. On the way to the cafeteria she feels the presence of Darkness and is attacked by a strange creature. Her hand is injured and Zoey rushes inside the school. She tries to blend in and act normally, then attempts to explain that something attacked her outside, but her friends ignore her and the situation degenerates with the appearance of a newly re-Marked Aphrodite, who chooses to sit with the 'nerd herd'. A confrontation is postponed by the arrival of new fledgling and famous archer James Stark.

After lunch, Zoey meets Aphrodite and Stevie Rae in her room. She finds out that Stevie Rae is mostly normal now and the only difference she experiences is an intense aversion to sunlight (she is burned by it), and that Aphrodite's Mark is fake: she has mostly reverted to a human teenager, except for her visions. After Stevie Rae's departure, the two are about to leave Zoey's room, but meet Damien, the Twins, and Jack on the threshold. Aphrodite explains why Zoey confided in her and that her visions show Zoey dying alone because she was rejected by her friends. They make up with Zoey. After they leave, Aphrodite asks Zoey to cast a circle to see if she still has her Earth affinity. When the green candle "zaps" her, Aphrodite is convinced that the goddess has taken back her gift because she was disappointed in her. Zoey casts the circle and asks for guidance. Nyx appears to tell them that she still loves Aphrodite, that she was only safekeeping the Earth affinity for Stevie Rae, and that Aphrodite reverted to human because her own humanity was too strong.

After the goddess's disappearance, they rush to a Council meeting. They find that the Priestess of all vampyres, Shekinah, has come to the House of Night to reject Neferet's declaration of war on humans. She follows Zoey's advice to put Detective Marx on the case instead. Erik Night returns to the school and takes over Professor Nolan's drama class, much to Zoey's dismay. On her way back Zoey meets Stark and watches him practice. He confesses to her that he has a gift for archery—that he never misses a target—and his talent was discovered when he killed his mentor by mistake. Because he fears his power, he asks Zoey to use her powers to protect the others from him. When Zoey starts to leave, his body rejects the Change and he dies in her arms. Zoey tells him, before he dies, that he might be revived as a red fledgling. They share a kiss and Zoey wonders, because of the sudden connection she had with Stark, if they're soul mates.

Zoey returns to class late and Erik, the new teacher, makes her play Desdemona to his Othello in a Shakespeare improvisation. She's initially mad, but uses this as an opportunity to explain her feelings for him and kisses him just before the bell rings, but he storms off. Outside, she meets Darius who brings her to Aphrodite, revealing a gift for speed. Aphrodite has been having a vision of Sylvia Redbird's house and copies out a poem in her writing. Zoey calls her grandmother and together they uncover that the poem is a warning about an ancient Cherokee legend. The poem warns that Kalona, a fallen angel, will rise again throughout the help of the Tsi Sgili queen, a dark witch. Her grandmother also warns her to beware the Raven Mockers: half-raven, half-human offspring of Kalona. Zoey asks her to come to the House of Night to be safe.

Zoey then goes to Shekinah and is attacked by a Raven Mocker on the way. She escapes Aphrodite's first vision of death by calling for Damien, who sends Air to banish the creature. Outside the Council chambers she happens to eavesdrop on a discussion between Neferet and Shekinah. She incredulously hears how Neferet manages to twist all the problems she's faced since the beginning of Zoey's change and make it seem as if they were Zoey's fault. After Neferet leaves, Zoey tells Shekinah about Street Cats, the charity Zoey and her friends frequent, and asks for lodging for her grandmother. On the doorstep she bumps into Erik and explains to him about Loren.

Her grandmother arrives and she moves into Zoey and Stevie Rae's room. In the middle of their discussion they discover a Raven Mocker listening at their window. The next day, Zoey is woken up by Shekinah, who announces that her grandmother was hurt in a car crash. She and Aphrodite rush to the hospital. To be sure her grandmother is guarded from Raven Mockers, whom she suspects of causing the crash, she asks the hospital if a medicine man could sit at her grandmother's bedside. When the Catholic hospital refuses, she asks Sister Mary Angela instead.

Zoey tries to introduce the red fledglings and Stevie Rae makes an appearance, but is interrupted by Neferet who reveals an undead Stark and tries to frame Zoey. In the ensuing commotion, Neferet makes Stark shoot Stevie Rae, fulfilling another line of Aphrodite's poem. Stevie Rae's blood frees Kalona from underground. Neferet reveals herself as the Tsi Sgili queen from the poem, and then kills Shekinah with her thoughts to prove it. As the Raven Mockers explode into their physical form and start a feeding frenzy, Zoey and her friends blend in with the night and together they escape to the Tulsa Depot tunnels.

Hunted

Zoey and her friends help Stevie Rae heal after the events at the end of Untamed. Zoey and Stevie Rae reconcile, and the latter introduces Zoey's group to some of the red vampyre fledglings. Aphrodite lets Stevie Rae feed on her to heal, which forms an Imprint between them. When Erik follows Zoey on her way to her room they kiss, but then Erik gets too rough and scares her. Erik and Zoey get back together, though Zoey's not entirely sure about dating him due to his possessiveness. Kalona starts getting into Zoey's dreams to seduce her, and calls her A-ya.

Kramisha, a red fledgling, is revealed to also express prophecies through her poetry, and Zoey gives her the title of Poet Laureate. This is how they find their first clue. One of Kramisha's poems states that Kalona and Neferet will be banished when Night, Humanity, Blood, Spirit and Earth come together, but Zoey doesn't know who will represent these elements.

Heath arrives at the tunnels, and Zoey goes outside to talk to him, much to Erik's chagrin. Heath tries to reconcile with Zoey, but to no avail. A Raven Mocker attacks them; Zoey protects Heath and is critically wounded in the process. She drinks from Heath to heal and they Imprint again, but she is still weakened. Kramisha gets excited and loses her control a little when she sees Heath (a human), leading Zoey to realize that the red fledglings may still have problems with their self-control. Darius finally declares that Zoey needs exposure to more adult vampyres to survive, and she is forced to return to the House of Night, much to Neferet's pleasure. Zoey finds out that Kalona's presence has caused the fledglings and the vampyres to turn their backs on Nyx (except for a few teachers). Kalona's favorite son, Rephaim, and Darius get into a fight; Darius protected Zoey when Rephaim was threatening her.

Zoey successfully persuades Stark to turn back to the good side. He becomes the second adult red vampyre when he pledges his Warrior's Oath to Zoey and she accepts. Zoey discusses the situation with Lenobia and, upon analyzing Kramisha's poem again, finds out that she is Night, Blood is Stevie Rae, Humanity is Aphrodite, Sister Mary Angela is Spirit, and Grandma Redbird is Earth.

Zoey and her friends set fire to the school as a diversion and escape on horseback to the Benedictine Abbey. Zoey and the other people mentioned in the poem open a circle and send everyone else inside. Neferet, Kalona and Stark arrive quickly afterwards in an SUV, followed by the Raven Mockers. Neferet and Kalona take turns at threatening and cajoling Zoey but she finally accepts the truth: that although A-ya is a part of her, she will choose her own destiny. She rejects Kalona. Neferet orders Stark to shoot Zoey but he says that Zoey is his heart and aims at her while thinking of himself. Realizing what will happen, Zoey uses the elements to stop the arrow and knocks Stark out in the process. Night, Humanity, Blood, Spirit, and Earth complete the spell and banish Neferet and Kalona. Zoey's Mark spreads to across her scar. She is deeply in pain because she had to say goodbye to Kalona, and knows that the fight isn't over yet.

Tempted

Tempted is told from the point of view of six characters: Zoey, Stevie Rae, Aphrodite, Rephaim, Heath and Stark.

Zoey's Story

In the aftermath of the last book, Zoey gathers her allies and starts organizing them. Stevie Rae notices she's very tired and takes over, leaving Zoey to take care of a wounded Stark and her grandmother. Having recovered from her accident, she tells Zoey that she is A-ya's reincarnation and that A-ya was made to love Kalona, so that's why she cannot help being uncontrollably attracted to Kalona as it's in her soul. In the end she's so stressed that when Erik finds her, demanding a share of her time, they quarrel and she dumps him for being overly jealous and possessive. By the next morning, Erik has formed a relationship with Venus, Aphrodite's ex-roommate.

Zoey rooms with Aphrodite and has a dream with Kalona at the same time she has a vision that links to several elements from the dream. Alerted by Zoey's panic, Stark climbs up to her room and sleeps in her bed to guard her from further intrusions (Kalona doesn't want competition so when another male is with Zoey, he leaves her alone). Aphrodite leaves and takes Darius to Stark's abandoned room. While they talk, she realizes she's come to love him and is afraid she is incapable of being loved and returning his feelings. He soothes her and pledges his Warrior's Oath to her.

The kids return to the House of Night. They find Professor Anastasia Lankford dead at Rephaim's hands, and Dragon, her mate, grieving her loss. Jack stays with Dragon to comfort him and coax him through his pain while Zoey goes to assess the mood of the school. Through Aphrodite's visions, Zoey's dreams of Kalona and Kramisha's prophetic poems they find that Kalona and Neferet plan on getting back the old ways of the vampyres. Following the rumors on Twitter, Jack finds Kalona and Neferet in Venice, on the isle of San Clemente with the Vampyre Council.

Another vision brings a new warning: if Zoey is with Kalona the world will end as they know it, and if she chooses love and Nyx he will "die" and the world will be safe. On the other hand, Zoey can't completely reject him, as she believes he can be saved. In an effort to gain her favour, Kalona shows her his past as Nyx's Warrior and promises to change his ways if she will have him.

Zoey and her friends go to Venice to have their say in the Council, but Stevie Rae stays behind, arguing that it's her responsibility as a High Priestess to take care of the rogues. Upon arriving, they learn that Neferet claims to be Nyx Incarnate and Kalona claims to be Erebus. It is revealed that Zoey's destiny is to face Kalona alone, meaning that only she can save the world. The Council declares Aphrodite a Prophetess of the vampyres, but is otherwise distrusting of Zoey, mainly because of her age. After the Council session is over Heath quarrels with Zoey because of Stark and goes for a walk. He eavesdrops on a conversation between Neferet and Kalona and is found out. He uses the Imprint to call Zoey and she arrives to see Kalona kill him. In her anguish she throws Spirit at Kalona, but her soul shatters and goes to the Otherworld. Zoey's tattoos disappear, leaving her with only a crescent moon.

Stevie Rae's Story

While sweeping the Benedictine Abbey grounds, Stevie Rae finds an injured Rephaim and helps him to safety against her better judgement. She binds his wounds and sends him through the tunnels. Back at the House of Night she's horrified to learn that he was actually the one to kill Anastasia Lankford.

Stevie Rae heals Rephaim enough that he can get deeper into the tunnels. In the tunnels Rephaim is found by the rogue red fledglings, and their leader, Nicole, uses her gift to peer into his mind and learns that Stevie Rae saved him. They use him as bait and catch Stevie Rae, leaving her alongside him in a cage on the roof to be burned down by the sun. Rephaim helps her and the two get in the ground at the last minute. To repay her for nursing him back to health, he offers her his immortal blood to heal her burns. Unexpectedly, the two Imprint and Stevie Rae loses hers with Aphrodite. Alerted by Aphrodite going into painful convulsions from the breaking of the Imprint, Zoey calls the House of Night and Erik and Lenobia rush to find and save Stevie Rae. With the last of her powers, Stevie Rae hides Rephaim from their eyes as they get her out. He promises to find her again.

Burned

The narrative mode is told from multiple points of view in third-person limited (including Stark's, Kalona's, Aphrodite's, Heath's, Rephaim's, and Stevie Rae's) and first-person narrative in Zoey's point of view, as in Tempted.

Zoey's Story

After Zoey's soul shatters, she reawakens in the Otherworld. The Council reveals that if her body were to remain unoccupied by her spirit, it would die in a week, although the return of a previously shattered soul was unheard of. Unwilling to take the chance, Neferet binds Kalona's soul with Darkness and sends him after Zoey to kill her.

Following a prophecy of Kramisha's, Darius, Aphrodite and Stark take Zoey's body to the Isle of Sgiach, a vampire who had previously separated from the main society. With the guidance of her Guardian, Stark undertakes a journey to the Otherworld where he slays his Warrior self to become the Shaman and reach Zoey.

Upon reaching the goddess' realm, Stark follows his bond of loyalty to find Zoey, and Heath with her. Following a revelation from Nyx, Stark convinces Heath that he has to leave Zoey and move on so that she, in turn, can move on and save the world from Kalona and Neferet. Stark approaches Zoey afterwards, but she is initially afraid. To motivate her, Stark goes out of the sacred grove to fight Kalona. Realising that she can't allow another one of her friends to die, she calls the pieces of her soul. However, before she can intervene, Kalona manages to kill Stark.

Zoey attacks Kalona and overpowers him, demanding the lifedebt owed to her for Heath. Nyx appears and forces him to revive Stark before banishing him again. Zoey fully accepts Stark as her Guardian and lets him drink from her so he could heal, and upon doing so the elements fill Zoey again and restore all of her tattoos. Following Spirit she returns to the real world, bringing him with her.

Stevie Rae's Story

To help her friends, Stevie Rae accidentally summons the white bull, which is Darkness personified, to find a way for Stark to enter the Otherworld. The bull gives Stevie Rae a poem and as payment for giving that knowledge, the white bull extracts his payment in her pain and her blood. Rephaim saves her at the last minute by offering himself and Stevie Rae summons the black bull and saves them both at the price of always staying connected to Rephaim's humanity.

Stevie Rae struggles with being bound to Rephaim and her growing feelings for him, eventually trying to break the Imprint by sleeping with Dallas. Upon Rephaim's arrival and his finding out about their bond, Dallas lets Darkness come into him and becomes the third red vampyre, with an affinity for electricity; after the ensuing confrontation, he flees.

On the following morning they both share their feelings for each other and Nyx reveals an image of Rephaim's human form in a fountain. When Zoey is revived, the sky becomes clouded and a winged figure rises out of the water, signalling Kalona's return. Rephaim departs, claiming he can't let go of his father.

Awakened

Zoey's Story

After Zoey and Stark awaken on Skye, they stay there for three weeks. Zoey finds herself reminiscing about Heath and missing him, but her new connection to Stark helps her learn to forget (almost). Zoey finds out that she wields the ancient magick of the fey and can bring back old fey that serve her elements, prompting Queen Sgiach to ask her to stay on Skye indefinitely and be her successor. When Aphrodite and Darius leave Skye, Zoey and Stark decide to stay a little longer while Stark recuperates and Zoey makes her choice. Neferet returns to the House of Night and kills Jack as a sacrifice for Darkness, in exchange for having trapped Kalona in the Otherworld. Zoey understands that one can't hide from Darkness and returns to Tulsa for the funerals, willing to fight for her home.

On the way to Jack's funeral, Zoey finds Erik crying, and has a conversation with him, where he reveals that he has been made a Tracker. They reconcile and agree to remain friends. During the funeral ceremony, Neferet asks Zoey for forgiveness to regain everyone's trust, then later sets her up by causing Rephaim to fall out of the sky. Stevie Rae openly admits to their relationship and the circle moves to protect the Raven Mocker, antagonizing the school. Neferet uses this as proof of Zoey's lack of experience and naiveté. Kalona interferes and faces the Sons of Erebus with Rephaim.

Nyx makes an apparition and publicly forgives Rephaim when he chooses light. When Neferet and Dragon do not accept him at the House of Night, Zoey, her friends, and the red fledglings leave to start a new House of Night on their own in the tunnels, with Zoey being the "vampyre queen", Stevie Rae being the High Priestess, Aphrodite being the Prophetess, Kramisha being the Poet Laureate, and all the red fledglings and Zoey's friends as the students.

Neferet leaves to punish Kalona for his supposed breaking of his oath but instead encounters the white bull. She pledges herself to him again and in return he gives her the magic to create a Vessel, a golem-type creature, called Aurox by sacrificing Linda Heffer. Back in the tunnels, Zoey dreams of her mother entering the Otherworld where Nyx welcomes her, and Zoey finds out that her mother truly loved her.

Stevie Rae's Story

As the days go on, Stevie Rae gets closer to Rephaim, but her heart also breaks everyday because she knows it is wrong for her to be with him. She meets up with him after Jack's death. They have a conversation and Rephaim does not tell Stevie Rae where he is staying because he doesn't want to betray his father. Kalona and Neferet agree to try to use Stevie Rae as a pawn to draw the House of Night away from Zoey. Kramisha writes a poem that tells Stevie Rae basically that Rephaim can be free, but it is his choice.

At the funeral ritual, Stevie Rae and Rephaim come out with their relationship. Rephaim only fights in self-defense to protect himself, but kills no one. Nyx forgives Rephaim and changes him into a shapeshifter (bird by day, boy by night). Stevie Rae and Rephaim kiss and become officially a couple.

Destined

Zoey's Story

Zoey awakens from the dream she had at the end of Awakened, and tells Stark of her mother's death; Stark comforts her. When they arrive at the House of Night, Zoey asks the Council for the accord in creating a second House of Night, which they give, with the initial condition that it will be a branch of the original, also a home for the red fledglings because they cannot be out during the daytime. Erik Marks a red fledgling named Shaylin, who has an affinity for True Sight, to see someone's "true colors" in their souls. Zoey's seer stone, a gift from Sgiach, continually warms around Aurox, proving to her that he was made from old magick. She continually tries to convince everyone that he is no Guardian, as Neferet claims, but as usual, no one believes her.

The High Council sends Thanatos to Tulsa to gather her own impression on the situation, but she reveals to Zoey that as a vampyre with an affinity for Death, she has seen the Darkness around Neferet and has come to build a case against her; she asks Zoey to let her perform a reveal ritual of her mother's death so that Zoey may be able to see what really happened to her mother.

Neferet sends Aurox to stop the ritual and makes a sacrifice when he chooses otherwise. Unwillingly he changes into a bull and wounds Rephaim, who is saved by Dragon sacrificing himself. Desperate to see Rephaim, Stevie Rae calls Kalona. Stark and Darius manage to send Aurox away, but not before Zoey sees Heath in him through her seer stone. Kalona arrives and apologizes to Nyx and Rephaim for his mistakes, thus escaping Rephaim's fate of dying. Kalona begs for forgiveness and chooses to pledge his Warrior's Oath to Thanatos when she declares herself the new High Priestess of the Tulsa House of Night. Before they leave, however, Stevie Rae calls everyone's attention to the circle where the ritual took place. Above the circle, they see Nyx who tells them, "Hold on to the memory of the healing that happened here this night. You will need that strength and peace for the upcoming fight."

Stevie Rae and Rephaim's Story

While Stevie Rae tries to convince Rephaim to break his ties to his father, he still pursues the hope that Kalona might change and to this end persuades Zoey to talk to him. Kalona offers them a truce and a pact against Neferet which she accepts. Rephaim finds an unexpected friend in Shaunee, who empathizes with him because of her own problems with her father, but this causes a split between the Twins (water and fire affinities of Zoey's Circle) that affects the whole group.

Rephaim only wants to stay close to his father because he is his father and he cannot bear to lose him, but Stevie Rae can't see this. Rephaim struggles with changing into a bird every day. Aphrodite sees a vision that Rephaim will be killed, seemingly by a sword, which prompts him to stay away from Dragon. Once they arrive at the ritual, it is clear that the vision meant Aurox and not Dragon, as Rephaim's death is caused by the Vessel. Rephaim is awakened, however, and he returns to Stevie Rae.

It is hinted at that Nyx only made Rephaim suffer as a bird by day for his father's mistakes and not his.

Hidden

The tenth book, Hidden, was released on October 16, 2012.

The book begins with Lenobia dreaming deeply about her former human love, Martin, who died while saving her in a fire. Neferet kills Dragon's cat, Shadowfax, as a payment to Darkness to ensure Rephaim's death, but accidentally causes a gas lamp to fall over, starting a fire. As Neferet leaves the stables, Anastasia's cat, Guinevere, curls up next to Shadowfax's body and dies of a broken heart.Lenobia wakes up to find Travis running into the fire-filled stables in an attempt to free the horses. Overtaken by a sense of déjà vu, Lenobia runs after Travis in an attempt to rescue him, and with the help of Nicole, succeeds in saving the horses and Travis, who is taken to a local hospital. The professors and Shaylin arrive; using her True Sight, Shaylin mentions that she saw Darkness in Neferet, and that the colors of Nicole's aura were changing for the better. Meanwhile, Lenobia is preoccupied about Dragon's disappearance.

Zoey, Stevie Rae and the rest of the gang return from the ritual to find the House of Night surrounded by the fire brigade and the stables in ruins. Upon finding the bodies of the two cats, Thanatos realizes a dark ritual has taken place and reunites their spirits with both Dragon and Anastasia in the Otherworld. Thanatos asks Kalona to build a funeral pyre for Dragon and resolves to proclaim Kalona as Death's Warrior at Dragon's funeral.

Aurox falls asleep at the stream, and is awoken by Grandma Redbird. Sensing his sadness, she invites him into her home. Grandma urges him to fight Darkness, and he resolves to return to the House of Night and seek redemption for his actions. Shaylin warns Zoey with her True Sight that Erin's colors are changing unfavorably. The gang are shocked when they see Neferet on the news attempting to instigate a war between humans and vampyres by claiming that the House of Night is a threat to the public. She uses Dallas to seduce Erin, who grows more and more distant from her friends.

The nerd herd hold their own press conference to dispel Neferet's claims by presenting her as a disgruntled ex-employee. The conference is a success, but when Neferet realizes that Aurox has turned against her because Linda Heffer was an imperfect sacrifice, she kidnaps Sylvia Redbird in order to create a truly perfect Vessel. During Dragon's funeral, Aurox hears Thanatos' speech and is horrified to learn that he is the result of Neferet sacrificing Linda. He leaves to seek refuge with Grandma Redbird but discovers signs of a struggle at her house and realizes that she has been taken. He returns to the House of Night to warn Zoey, only to be attacked by Stark. Thanotos and Kalona break up the fight and are concerned when they hear what Aurox has to say. Kalona volunteers to visit Neferet at her penthouse and find out where she is holding Grandma Redbird. Before he sets out to Neferet's penthouse, Thanatos prays to Nyx to watch over her Warrior. Kalona is shocked when he feels that Nyx is listening; resolved to not let her down, he sets out on his mission.

At the penthouse, Kalona gets a frosty welcome from Neferet but charms his way into her good books. He finds Sylvia being attacked by the threads of Darkness, and realizes that she has only survived by using the power of the earth to fight Darkness. Neferet sees through Kalona's ruse and orders Darkness to feed from Kalona and attack Sylvia. Kalona, having officially chosen Light, discovers that Darkness no longer obeys him and struggles to free himself from their assault; to prevent Darkness from feeding on him any longer, Kalona is forced to flee. Aurox then volunteers to rescue Sylvia. Zoey, the nerd herd, and the Warriors train him to master his anger. Before they set out, Kramisha gives Zoey a prophetic poem that appears to be a spell. Zoey has Shaylin stand in as her water element when it becomes clear that Erin has joined Dallas and Darkness.

Aurox arrives at the penthouse and is horrified to find Sylvia near death. Before he can free her, Neferet commands Aurox to release the beast and kill Sylvia. Despite the protection of the four elements, Aurox manifests into the bull when Neferet realizes that spirit is preventing him from killing Sylvia, and orders Darkness to ensure Aurox obeys. Zoey realizes that something is wrong when the elements return to their wielders and she and the gang race to the penthouse. When they confront Neferet, Zoey uses her Seer Stone and Kramisha's spell; the stone turns into a mirror. Neferet sees a vision of her past in the mirror and breaks down weeping. Zoey urges Aurox to return come back to them. While Neferet is distracted, Aurox charges towards her and the two fall over the balcony. Kalona saves Aurox, but Neferet's body hits the ground below, and dissolves into spiders which scurry away. Zoey realizes that their fight with Neferet is far from over. Stark, seeing Aurox's true form in the mirror when Zoey did the spell, urges her to repeat it, this time using the mirror on Aurox. The gang are shocked to see Heath within Aurox. Aurox is mesmerized by his reflection and asks Zoey who Heath was to her. She replies, "Heath was my humanity. Now it looks like he's your humanity too." Stark assures Zoey that they will always have love and the nerd herd return to the House of Night to prepare for Neferet's return.

In the epilogue, posted on the HoN website, the nerd herd are at the fair they had organized in the middle of Hidden. The fledglings seem to have recovered from their previous battle with Neferet, and Grandma Redbird has healed. The fair seems to be going successfully, but when Zoey and Aphrodite go to help Sister Mary Angela with a Street Cats adoption, they find large spiders multiplying in a basket of kittens. Thanatos successfully diverts attention from the scene, and Zoey begins to cast a circle. With Shaylin busy, Erin unenthusiastically stands in for water. The circle completes its banishing of the spiders, which morph into a ghostly figure of Neferet, but as Zoey closes the circle, Erin rejects the Change and dies in Shaunee's arms.

Revealed

The book is due to be released on October 15, 2013. The first chapter, released online in August 2013, shows Neferet's revival and appearance at the fair from Hidden. As she escapes the fair, she returns to her full human form, but is severely weak and lusting for blood. When she feeds from and kills Mayor LaFont (Aphrodite's father) and a stray fox, she regains some of her power over Darkness, and eventually falls asleep in the Woodward Park grotto.

Redeemed

In her blog, PC announced that there would be twelve books in the House of Night series, and announced the title through her blog. This is the final book in the series and it is planned to come out in October 14, 2014. It will focus on the fledglings' battle with Neferet and the dark red fledglings. PC also announced in a live stream video chat that in the final book an epic battle between Light and Darkness is going to happen. She noted that the old magic of the Isle of Skye was going to help Zoey to defeat Neferet once and for all.

In the final electrifying novel in the HoN series, Neferet has finally made herself known to mortals. A Dark Goddess is loose on Tulsa and the world. No single vampyre is strong enough to vanquish her – unless that creature has the power to summon the elements as well as the ability to wield Old Magick. Dragon's Oath

As Dragon sits by Jack's funeral pyre, he reminisces about his first meeting with Anastasia,and he talks about the first time he lost his virginity. He pulls out a locket and opens it, but the wind lifts the last of her hair inside and carries it over to the pyre. This starts a spell Anastasia had laid on the locket, that conveys to Dragon her last wish- to temper his blade with mercy.

The book goes back to his human days. The third son of an English lord, Bryan Lankford is young, cocky and bold. His father disowns him when he becomes involved in a scandal with a neighbor's daughter and sends him to the Americas. At the docks he meets a Tracker, who claims him as a fledgling and takes him aboard a ship with a sculpted dragon's head, which inspires Bryan in regards to his new name.

A few years later, at the St. Louis House of Night, Anastasia, a 22-year-old newly Changed adult vampyre, has been hired as the Spells and Rituals teacher. While talking with the local High Priestess, Pandeia, and her mate, Anastasia brings up the problem of some fledglings who had asked for a love spell for Bryan. Instead of refusing them, she asks permission to perform a drawing spell, to show the fledglings the truth about Bryan. She starts the spell on a night with a full moon. As she is also thinking of him at the time of the spell, she is shown a futuristic apparition of him, when he has fully Changed and is no longer a fledgling. Anastasia finds that she loves Bryan, and then he really appears as his nineteen-year-old self. Bryan, who is now Dragon, helps Anastasia finish her spell, and begins leaving her sun-flowers from that moment.

An officer, Jesse Biddle, consults with a creature about who he should kill- Anastasia - so that Light doesn't defeat them. At the House of Night, Pandeia expresses concern regarding Biddle's harassment. Anastasia proposes she go and perform a peace spell. As a Warrior represents the opposite of the spell, they propose she take Bryan, who is still a fledgling, but already a Sword master. While she performs a circle near his place, Anastasia is attacked by Biddle and dragged inside after he chokes Bryan. Biddle fights and nearly kills Anastasia, and prepares to rape her, but she draws a circle of salt around her and creates a barrier.

Dragon comes and kills Biddle, and prepares to also kill the creature, but Anastasia has a vision of him and tells him to temper his strength with mercy, and think about what he's doing. Dragon sets the creature free and pledges his Warrior's Oath to her. As a result he Changes into an adult vampyre.

Back in the present, Nyx allows Dragon to once again see Anastasia while entering the otherworld.

Lenobia's Vow

This is the second book of the spin-off House of Night Novellas series, featuring Lenobia.

In Évreux, France, in 1788, Lenobia is the bastard daughter of a powerful baron. Following the death of his legitimate daughter, Cecile, she agrees to play her role and marry her intended in the Americas. Upon reaching the boat, she learns to her dismay that the bishop of Évreux will come, too. On the way the convoy meets a vampire who Marks Lenobia. Angered, the bishop tries to kill her and uses his dark power over fire, but is ultimately killed by Martin, who dies too. Lenobia is traumatized, but quickly discovers an affinity for horses. She finds the strength to move on, vowing to wait for Martin.

Neferet's Curse

This is the third book of the spin-off House of Night Novellas series, about Neferet's past.

Kalona's Fall

PC and Kristin are planning to write a novel about Kalona; since his story was too big to fit into a novella, they decided to write an entire novel about him. However the authors later decided to write a novella. The novella will be released before Redeemed, the last book in the main series in July 29, 2014.

The Fledgling Handbook 101

The accompaniment to the series, the Fledgling Handbook 101 is referenced many times throughout the series and was released on October 26, 2010. The Handbook is the book that a fledgling gets when they first enter the House of Night. This book is full of explanations, stories, spells and rituals that are found commonly in a vampyre's life. Some stories include how Cleopatra actually made Egypt fall to Rome, how the Dark Daughters were born, and the story of the ancient Roman High Priestess whose soul shattered (mentioned in a conversation between Stevie Rae and Aphrodite in Burned).

This deck is a collaboration between P.C. Cast (whose House of Night titles have over seven million copies in print), and oracle expert Collette Baron-Reid. The product will be available in both print and electronic versions, and will go on sale simultaneously with HIDDEN, P.C. Cast's 10th hardcover in the series. The Oracle of Nyx deck is an original divination system that was created specifically as a companion to the House of Night series. Readers are invited to pose questions to the goddess Nyx and draw an oracle card to receive guidance. PC and her editor worked together with Dark Horse Comics to create a graphic novel version of the House of Night.

Characters

• Zoey Redbird - the main protagonist of the series. She has an affinity for all five elements (air, fire, water, earth and spirit), and is the only High Priestess to have ever been given that magnitude of power by the Goddess Nyx. Zoey is also the youngest High Priestess in vampyre history.
• Neferet - Main antagonist and former High Priestess, now immortal Consort of Darkness and witch Queen of the Tsi Sgili. Neferet is initially introduced as a kind, loving mentor to Zoey, but is gradually revealed to be on the side of Darkness.
• Aphrodite LaFont - Former "hag from hell" and Zoey's enemy in the first book. An Oracle and Prophetess, she gradually grows to trust Zoey and the rest of the nerd herd.
• Stevie Rae - Zoey's best friend, and the first red vampyre High Priestess in history. She also has an affinity for earth.
• Erin Bates - A fledgling and member of the nerd herd before she left to be with the evil red fledgling Dallas she has an affinity for water.
• Shaunee Cole - A fledgling and member of the nerd herd with an affinity for fire.
• Damien Maslin - A fledgling and member of the nerd herd with an affinity for air.
• Heath Luck - Zoey's human "almost ex-boyfriend", who can't seem to stay away despite her best efforts. Their Imprint breaks twice: once when Zoey Imprints with Loren Blake, and again when Heath is killed by Kalona. Part of Heath's soul later returns in Aurox, the Vessel created by Neferet.
• Nyx - The Goddess of the vampyres and former love of Kalona. Erebus is her Consort.
• Erik Night - A former fledgling and Zoey's ex-boyfriend, now the vampyre Tracker for Tulsa's House of Night. Erik has a talent for acting, and once won an international House of Night monologue competition.
• Kalona - Erebus's brother, the fallen immortal Guardian of Nyx. Father of Rephaim and the Raven Mockers.
• Darius - A Son of Erebus tasked with guarding Zoey. He later becomes Aphrodite's Warrior.
• Loren Blake - The vampyre Poet Laureate and a professor at the House of Night, he flirts with Zoey and later Imprints with her, but is revealed to be Neferet's lover and puppet. Neferet kills him in Chosen when he begins to show real concern for Zoey.
• Kramisha - A red fledgling with a gift for poetry who is named Zoey's Poet Laureate.
• Dragon Lankford - Anastasia's husband, the fencing instructor.
• Anastasia Lankford - Dragon's wife, the Spells and Rituals professor.
• Sylvia Redbird - Zoey's grandmother, a Cherokee Wise Woman. She owns a lavender farm and is often on hand to give Zoey advice and reassurance in the fight against Darkness.
• James Stark - A red vampyre who becomes Zoey's Warrior and Guardian and also has an affinity for archery (he can't miss what he aims at).
• Jack Twist - Damien's boyfriend and a member of the nerd herd, who has an affinity for technology. In "Awakened", Neferet, needing a sacrifice for the white bull, chose Jack because he refused to revoke Nyx in favor of evil, and killed him, making it seem like an accident.
• Rephaim - Kalona's favorite Raven Mocker son and become Stevie Rae's boyfriend.
• Shaylin Ruede - A blind girl who is the first fledgling to be Marked red. When Erik Marks her, she is gifted with an affinity for True Sight, and later for water.
• Nisroc - Kalona's second eldest son and second most evolved, took care of his brothers while Kalona and Rephaim were away.

Adaptations

Film adaptation

In November 2011, it was announced that the film rights to House of Night had been acquired by producer Samuel Hadida's company, Davis Films. P.C. Cast also said through her live stream chat that she confirmed for five movies. The first is going to be released in 2015, with filming beginning this year. Currently, an outline of the screenplay has been written. ^[43] No casting has been done; however Samuel and P.C. have discussed using both open casting calls as well as known talent.^[44][45]

Comic book adaptation

P.C. Cast announced on her website that a graphic book adaptation of the House of Night series will be published in monthly issues by Dark Horse Comics starting the 9 of November 2011.^[46] The comic book will only span 5 issues, each relating to a different element. The action takes place between Marked and Betrayed concerning Zoey's struggle to become a good leader for the Dark Daughters. To help her learn, Nyx places five tests in her way, each dealing with a story from the Fledgling Handbook.

The drawings will be done by Joëlle Jones, cover by Jenny Frison.

Reception

The series has received generally good reviews, reaching 5^th in the New York Times Children's Bestsellers list.^[47]

Bans and challenges

In 2009 Henderson Junior High School in the Stephenville, Texas, banned the entire series from its libraries, including the books that have yet to be written for "sexual content and nudity".^[51]
