Hoot (Hangul: 훗; subtitled 009) is the third mini-album by a South Korean girl group, Girls' Generation. The mini-album consisted of five songs, and was released on October 27, 2010 by S.M. Entertainment.[1][2][3][4][5] The Album has sold 350,000 copies in Worldwide.[citation needed]
The album is listed, by Gaon Album Chart as the third best-selling album of 2010 in South Korea, with 163,066 copies sold.[6]
History
SM Entertainment posted an audio teaser and three posters of Bond girls and Austin Powers series theme on October 19, 2010 on the official Girls' Generation website. The girls' style evoked classical 1970s pin-up girls, along with Western-style cowgirls.[7] The teaser was released on SM Entertainment's official YouTube Channel and Girls' Generation's official website on October 24, at 12AM KST.
The EP featured efforts from producers and writers such as Wheesung, Jinu (Hitchhiker), Kenzie, and former Roommate and Nadia member Hwang Hyun. Girls' Generation member Yuri, wrote the lyrics for "Mistake".
The mini-album, just like its predecessor "Oh!", got an international release on iTunes Store. The release was first revealed on Hoot's information box of the official music video on YouTube.[8] Hoot was released on December 17 in Republic of China, and on December 22 in Japan. This is the first release of the group, as well as SM Entertainment itself, not to be distributed by any other large independent labels, specifically Avex Asia in other Asian countries.
Composition
The title song "Hoot" is a dance-pop song whose theme is about a lady warning her blunt boyfriend not to take his eyes off her. It was composed by Danish songwriter-producers Martin Michael Larsson and Lars Halvor Jensen, of DEEKAY, together with British songwriter Alex James, with the intention of creating an "exciting up-tempo record for a female artist or group".[9] It was originally titled "Bulletproof" and written with English lyrics. This song also features their label-mate, Choi Siwon from Super Junior in their music video.[9] "Mistake" is the second track and a R&B ballad with lyrics by Kwon Yuri which is about a girl who can't move on from a relationship with a guy who asked her to "wait" for him but in the end he found another and she blames herself for not trying harder to keep the love between them. The third track "My Best Friend" is a contemporary R&B song with lyrics by Wheesung that talks about each other's friendship of Girls' Generation. The fourth track "Wake Up" is an electropop song carrying dark synth beat-sounds with medium tempo shuffle rhythm. "Snowy Wish" is the fifth track and a bright dance-pop song.[10]
Single
Hoot debuted at the #1 spot on October 30, 2010 on the Gaon Chart.[11] The song won Triple Crown on Inkigayo on November 28, 2010 and won 5 times on Music Bank of KBS. The song demo was written and recorded in the UK, with Nina Woodford singing the vocal, and then finished and mixed in Denmark.
Promotion
They held their comeback stage on October 29, 2010 on KBS's Music Bank. It was also performed on Show! Music Core, Inkigayo, and M! Countdown. They held their goodbye stage on December 4, 2010 on MBC's Show! Music Core.
Commercial performance
A day before the official release of Hoot, it was reported that it has received over 150,000 sales in pre-orders. The album achieve gold status in Japan for selling 100,000 copies.[12] The album is listed, by Gaon Album Chart as the third best-selling album of 2010 in South Korea, with 163,066 copies sold.[6]
