Honey Irani (born January 17, 1950) is an Indian film actress and an award-winning screenwriter, who works in Hindi cinema.

Personal life and background

Honey Irani was born into a Irani, Zoroastrian family on January 17, 1950.

She married to Javed Akhtar on March 21, 1972, although the marriage ended in divorce.[1] They have two children, one son, Farhan Akhtar and a daughter, Zoya Akhtar,[2] both filmmakers. She is the maternal aunt of choreographer/director Farah Khan and director/host Sajid Khan. Her sister Daisy Irani was a famous child artist of the 50's and 60's.[3]

Career

Honey Irani began her Bollywood career as a child actress with roles in films like Chirag Kahaan Roshni Kahaan and Bombay Ka Chor. She has acted in over 72 films.[4]

After her divorce she started doing embroidery on sarees to support her family. Though she has been writing short stories all this while, she never shared them. Now, she told the story idea of Aaina (1993) to Pam Chopra,wife of Yash Chopra for a TV series, however it was selected by Yash Chopra for a film. Meanwhile, Yash Chopra asked her to developed a story idea, which went on to become her debut as a screenwriter, Lamhe (1991), starring Sridevi. The film was a hit and she won the Filmfare Award for Best Story for the film, and it paved way for a successful career as screenwriter. She won the award again for Kya Kehna in 2002, besides winning Filmfare Award for Best Screenplay with Ravi Kapoor for blockbuster Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai in 2001. [1]
