"Hole in My Shoe" is a song by English rock band Traffic which as a single release reached number 2 in the UK Singles Chart[1] and number 22 in the German charts, in 1967.[2] Composed by guitarist Dave Mason, it was disliked by the other three members of the group, who felt that it did not represent the band's musical or lyrical style.[3]
The brief monologue, over the mellotron passage, is spoken by Chris Blackwell's stepdaughter Francine Heimann.
Cover version
In the BBC sitcom The Young Ones, Neil, one of the principal characters, continually sang a recognisable line from the song. Eventually, in July 1984, Nigel Planer who played Neil recorded a cover version of the song, which reached the same number 2 peak as the original. He also performed the song as Neil on the BBC show Top of the Pops, where he asked Paul Weller to "listen to the lyrics!" The single won "Best Comedy Single" at the 1985 Brit Awards (then called "The BPI Awards"). The one-off award category was seen as having been completely invented just for the single.[citation needed]
In 2013 Planer kept a copy of his version displayed in his flat, admitting "every now and then I still give the record a spin."[4]
