89.9 Hitz FM was an aspirant youth community broadcaster from 1992 to 2001 in Melbourne. The station ran a series of test broadcasts from various studios in Melbourne's suburbs. In keeping with the youth format no music over 5 years old was played, station staff and volunteers were to be no older than 30 years although initially the age limit for on air announcers was 25 years. The age limit for on air announcers was extended to 30 years old in 1999. The then ABA did not grant Hitz FM a full time license.[1] The station was run by volunteers and funded by sponsorship announcements, voluntary membership fees and merchandise sales.
