Hitman 6 is an upcoming stealth action-adventure video game for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It is currently under development by IO Interactive and will be the sixth entry in the Hitman video game series. A possible trademark for the name, Hitman: Profession, was filed in Europe in December 2011.

Development

Originally, the game was to be developed by Square Enix developer Square Enix Montreal, a newly established studio.[1] However, due to cutbacks and layoffs at IO Interactive, a Square Enix representative said that "The studio (IO Interactive) will focus resolutely on the future vision for the Hitman franchise and is in pre-production on a new AAA Hitman project. However we have taken the difficult decision to cancel other studio projects and initiatives at IO and reduce the workforce in this studio, which will impact almost half of the employees currently at IO, as we make internal adjustments to face the challenges of today's market."[2][3][4]

Square Enix Montreal (who was originally working on the next Hitman title) will now reportedly focus on developing smartphone and tablet versions of Hitman and other games.[5][6][7]

On January 6, 2014, it was reported through IGN that Square Enix Montreal will be working to develop tablet and smartphone Hitman games and IO Interactive will only focus on the next Hitman installment for PC and next-generation consoles.[8]

On January 16, 2014, IO Interactive posted an open letter addressed to fans on the Hitman website, sharing details on the sequel. IO has rectified the "mistakes of Absolution". The game will feature an "open, non-linear level design," and the return of Contracts mode.[9]
