Highdown School and Sixth Form Centre is an academy in Emmer Green on the outskirts of Reading, Berkshire, England. It has a capacity for approximately 1450 students aged 11–18. There are currently 1342 students on roll at the school with 262 students attending the Sixth Form.[1]
Highdown School is a specialist school for Maths and Computing. The school has developed an international reputation and government recognition for outstanding practice in this vitally important area (ICT). The schools contribution to the development of ICT in education has been acknowledged by Bill Gates, President of Microsoft, in his book ‘Business @ the Speed of Thought’.[2]
School History
Highdown School was established as a comprehensive school in September 1971.[3]
Highdown School has three Grade II listed buildings within its grounds. The main building was altered and extended by Richard Norman Shaw from 1878-80.[4][5][6]
On 1 November 2010, Highdown School became an independently run academy after being judged outstanding by Ofsted.[7][8] Headteacher, Mr Tim Royale stated: "We look forward to using our freedom to innovate so that we can provide the best possible educational experience for our community". Highdown School become the first in a Berkshire town to be given academy status under new rules introduced by the coalition government.[9]
On 7 December 2012, The school’s governing body announced that Rachel Cave would take over the Emmer Green secondary from Easter 2013 replacing Tim Royale, Headteacher of 14 years. Ms Cave joins Highdown from her position as a Deputy Headteacher at The Heathland School in Hounslow, which was ranked as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted following its last inspection in 2013.[10] Ms Cave's hand selected senior team comprises new Deputy Headteacher, Mr Matthew Grantham, a former Assistant Headteacher from The Heathland School and Ms Mary Neal who will take up the interim post as Deputy Headteacher for the 2013/14 academic year.
During May 2013 Highdown School was judged as "Requiring Improvement" by OFSTED.[11] Ms Cave maintained the inspection had not found anything that the school’s senior management team was unaware of and OFSTED had recognised its plans for improvement.
