Herbert Standing (13 November 1846 – 5 December 1923) was a British stage and screen actor and the patriarch of the Standing family of actors. He was the father of numerous children who many of them had careers in the theatre and/or in cinema. Standing himself towards the end of his life appeared in many Hollywood silent films.

He began in theatre in Britain in 1867 and had a 40 plus year as a stage actor before turning to films in 1913.[1]

Amongst his famous children are Guy Standing, Wyndham Standing, Percy Standing and Jack Standing. Other children are Herbert Standing, Jr. and Aubrey Standing.[2] Grandchildren who were also involved in show business, Joan Standing, Kay Hammond, Guy Standing Jr., Jack Standing Jr. A nephew was Gordon Standing(1887–1927).[3] Present day character actor John Standing (son of Kay Hammond) is a great-grandson.
