Henry Lee Graves

Henry Lee Graves (February 22, 1813 – November 4, 1881) was the President of Baylor University from 1846 to 1851.[1][2]

Biography

Henry Lee Graves was born in Yanceyville, North Carolina in 1813.[1][2] From 1831 to 1835, he attended the University of North Carolina.[1][2] From 1835 to 1837, he taught mathematics at Wake Forest College, then attended the Hamilton Literary and Theological Institute in New York City.[1][2] He taught at a Baptist high school in Covington, Georgia in 1843.[1][2] He served as the first President of Baylor University from 1846 to 1851.[1][2] He was a pastor in the Independence Baptist church, an officer in the Union Baptist Association, and a Texas delegate to the Southern Baptist Convention of 1845 in Augusta, Georgia.[1][2] In 1848, he was President of the Texas Baptist State Convention.[2] He was also a pastor in Brenham and Schulenburg. From 1859 to 1869, he was President of the Fairfield Female Academy in Fairfield, Texas.[2] In 1872, he was President of the Texas Baptist Education Society.[2] He died in 1881.[2]
