Henley Boat Races

Oxford women (dark blue) lead Cambridge women at the 2009 Henley Boat Race.

The Henley Boat Races are a series of rowing races between crews representing the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. The event takes place on the River Thames at Henley, usually the week before the University Boat Race which is run on the 6,779m Championship Course in London. The races include:

Women's Boat Race (OUWBC vs CUWBC)
Women's Reserves (Osiris vs Blondie)
Lightweight Men's Boat Race (OULRC vs CULRC)
Lightweight Men's Reserves (Nephthys vs Granta) [In abeyance since 2009] ^[1]
Lightweight Women's Boat Race (OUWLRC vs CUWBC Lightweights)
Women's Intercollegiate Boat Race (between one college representing Oxford and one representing Cambridge)
Men's Intercollegiate Boat Race (between one college representing Oxford and one representing Cambridge)

The university races take place over a 2,000m course, downstream — the opposite direction to the Henley Royal Regatta course — and finish halfway down Temple Island. Currently Cambridge have abandoned their Granta boat due to lack of funding. The 2013 event was moved to Dorney Lake as a result of flooding on the Thames.^[2]

The Women's Boat Race will move to the Tideway in 2015, to take place on the same course and on the same day as the men's Boat Race.^[3]

The Cambridge University Women's Boat Club was only founded in 1941, when Girton College became the second women's college to cater for rowing. Until that year, Cambridge was represented by Newnham College Boat Club.

*The events until 1935 were not run as races, but were instead largely judged on style merit marks. For the first couple of races, the two crews were not allowed to be on the river at the same time
