Heimberg is a municipality in the administrative district of Thun in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.
History
Heimberg is first mentioned in 1146 as Heimberc.[3]
Geography
Heimberg has an area, as of 2009, of 5.41 km2 (2.09 sq mi). Of this area, 1.6 km2 (0.62 sq mi) or 29.6% is used for agricultural purposes, while 1.85 km2 (0.71 sq mi) or 34.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 1.79 km2 (0.69 sq mi) or 33.1% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.11 km2 (27 acres) or 2.0% is either rivers or lakes and 0.01 km2 (2.5 acres) or 0.2% is unproductive land.[4]
Of the built up area, industrial buildings made up 5.4% of the total area while housing and buildings made up 15.0% and transportation infrastructure made up 10.0%. while parks, green belts and sports fields made up 1.8%. 33.5% of the total land area is heavily forested. Of the agricultural land, 16.3% is used for growing crops and 12.6% is pastures. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.[4]
The municipality is located on the right bank of the Aare river, between the Rotache river in the north and the Zulg river in the south. It includes the village of Thungschneit which became part of the municipality in 1869.
Demographics
Heimberg has a population (as of 31 December 2012) of 6,465.[1] As of 2007, 7.1% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 11.1%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (93.2%), with Albanian being second most common (1.2%) and Italian being third (1.0%).
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 37.3% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (17.7%), the FDP (11.8%) and the local small left-wing parties (9.8%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 25% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 62.3% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 12.8%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Heimberg about 76.2% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).
Heimberg has an unemployment rate of 1.64%. As of 2005, there were 84 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 21 businesses involved in this sector. 580 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 80 businesses in this sector. 1473 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 181 businesses in this sector.[5] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]
