Critical reception
"Heavy Metal Lover" has received generally positive reviews from music critics, with some commending its lyrical content and production. Many critics have also praised the song's opening line, "I want your whiskey mouth all over my blonde south". Sal Cinquemani of Slant Magazine called "Heavy Metal Lover" an anthem for "the typically flouted watersports-enthusiast community".[2] Caryn Ganz of Spin was impressed with the track, calling it "grimy doom disco, along with 'Scheiße' and Government Hooker, while praising the line 'I want your whiskey mouth all over my blonde south', calling it "awesomely ludicrous"[3] Jody Rosen from Rolling Stone called the song "smutty talk, set against a wall of fuzzy synthesizer sound".[4] Kitty Empire of The Observer gave 'Heavy Metal Lover' a positive review, calling it one of the album's "sweet" moments.[5] James Montgomery of MTV lauded the song, calling it the second best of 2011 behind Rolling in the Deep. He described the song as having "a masterful mix of Transformer-sized techno whomp and supple", and that it was "far and away the best song off Born This Way". He also praised the lyric "I want your whiskey mouth all over my blonde south" as an "added bonus" and that it "may very well be the best line of the year".[6]
Evan Sawdey from PopMatters gave the song a negative review, saying "('Heavy Metal Lover' is) more producer’s showcase than actual song".[7] Kerri Mason from Billboard was mixed with the review, calling it "relatively forgettable leather & lust" although praised the first line "I want your whiskey mouth all over my blonde south".[8] Neil McCormick from The Daily Telegraph described the song as "an electropop ode to smelly dudes in leather jackets" powered by overloaded synths.[1] NME's Dan Martin felt that the song was "a brutish cousin of 'Teeth' from The Fame Monster, as more mechanised rave woofs pummel underneath. It’s all very nice and Berlin-inspired, but all the filthy-filthy sexy-sexy growling (“I want your whiskey mouth/All over my blonde south”) all just get a bit too much".[9] Robert Copsey of the website Digital Spy called the song "one of the less hectic efforts on the record" which according to him provide a momentary breather after the string of full-throttled club-pop stompers.[10][10]
Live performances
Gaga performed a medley of Heavy Metal Lover/Marry The Night/Born This Way on December 31, 2011 at the New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest. A month after the performance, there was much speculation about this song being released as a single or not.[11][12][13] "Heavy Metal Lover" was also performed at The Born This Way Ball. She is "fused" with a motorcycle, reminiscent of the Born This Way album cover, in which she "drives" around the Monster Pit.
