Haywood Mall is a super-regional shopping mall in Greenville, South Carolina, United States. The mall is the largest in the state, with 1,300,000 square feet (120,000 m2) of retail space.
Description
The super-regional mall opened in 1980 at the intersection of Haywood Road and I-385/Golden Strip Freeway. Haywood's anchor stores include Belk, Dillard's, J. C. Penney, Macy's and Sears, with the Macy's store being one of only two in South Carolina.
Since its 1995 renovation, the mall has been L-shaped.
History
The third major mall to open within a five-mile (8 km) radius, Haywood was completed in 1980 and contained anchors Belk, J. C. Penney, Rich's, and Sears, and 900,000 square feet (84,000 m2) of retail space. Through the 1980s, Haywood and rivals McAlister Square and Greenville Mall competed with a mix of different anchors. Greenville's fourth enclosed mall, Bell Tower Mall, was converted into offices in the mid-1980s.
In 1995, Dillard's announced that it would close its smaller McAlister Square location and build a three-level store at Haywood. For its part, the mall constructed a wing to connect the new anchor, bringing the mall to 1,300,000 square feet (120,000 m2), as well as a parking deck and new Belk entrance. Haywood was then able to lure several higher-end specialty shops away from its rivals and position itself as the region's preeminent mall.
The mall underwent a significant interior renovation in 2005, the same year that the Rich's name was retired by Federated Stores and converted to Macy's. After the renovation, many of the mall's tenants as well as Macy's and Belk significantly remodeled their store. Also, many new high-end retailers joined, such as Pottery Barn and Williams-Sonoma. The following year, Haywood gained press when American Eagle Outfitters selected the mall to host its first Aerie store in the world. On July 10, 2010 Apple opened one of its largest stores in the Carolinas at Haywood Mall on the lower level next to Abercrombie & Fitch.
