Haytham I was appointed as governor of Shirvan by Caliph al-Mutawakkil.[1] After al-Mutawakkil's murder in 861, he declared himself independent as "Shirvanshah". He also declared his brother Yazid ibn Khalid as Layzanshah.[2]
