Hatebreeder is the second studio album by Finnish metal band Children of Bodom. In it, the band explores a classically influenced sound. It also carries some influence from power metal, in the fast riffs and complex soloing style. This record contains concert favorites such as “Silent Night, Bodom Night” and “Downfall”. The keyboards show more presence on this album, with longer and more elaborate solos than in their previous work. The “Deluxe Edition” was released in 2005 with bonus material. Hatebreeder was also re-released in 2008.

This was the first album with guitars in D tuning (D, G, C, F, A, D) after Something Wild, which was in C♯ tuning (C♯, F♯, B, E, G♯, C♯).

Reception

In 2005, Hatebreeder was ranked number 492 in Rock Hard magazine's book of The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time.[8]

Samples and references

  • The intro to “Warheart” is from the film Amadeus, Laiho’s favourite movie.
  • Black Widow is largely based on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's concerto 20 in D Minor.
  • The bridge in “Hatebreeder” (right before the final verse and chorus) that uses a series of arpeggios is from Mozart’s Queen of the Night Aria from The Magic Flute.
  • The song “Wrath Within” is composed almost entirely of riffs from various songs by the Finnish thrash band Stone.
  • The flute melody at the beginning of “Black Widow” is a clip from a Miami Vice background theme from the Season 2 Episode 1 episode “The Prodigal Son”, composed by Jan Hammer.
  • “No Commands” is originally from Stone’s self-titled debut album.
  • “Aces High” is originally from the Iron Maiden album, Powerslave.
