Demands
The city lacks direct connectivity with many major cities of India. The frequency of trains from some important stations is only once or twice per week and there is still demand to introduce new trains for such important cities. The main reason for this is lack of sufficient rail route infrastructure in this region. Dehradun (DDN) which is located 52 km away has only one platform for arrival and two platforms for departure (again due to lack of space in Dehradun city) thus making it incapable of handling too many passenger trains like other major railway stations do. A new expansion of Dehradun railway station is proposed to come up at Harrawala near Dehradun which is expected to handle more load due to a larger number of platforms. This will help Haridwar maintain a good connectivity as well. However, Haridwar now has additional platforms with dead ends that mark it as a terminus/originating point thus increasing connectivity.
