Har-Ber High School is a comprehensive public high school for grades ten through twelve serving the community of Springdale, Arkansas, United States. Har-Ber High School is the one of two high schools managed in Washington County by the Springdale School District; other is Springdale High School. Within the state, the school is also known as Springdale Har-Ber.

History

Accredited by AdvancED since 1979, Har-Ber High School is named in honor of local industrialists Harvey and Bernice Jones.[4]

Academics

Curriculum

The assumed course of study at Har-Ber High School is the Smart Core curriculum developed by the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE). Students engage in regular and Advanced Placement (AP) coursework and exams to obtain at least 22 units before graduation. Exceptional students have been recognized as National Merit Finalists.

Awards and recognition

In 2011, Dr. Michael Shepherd was been named Virco National Assistant Principal of the Year at the National Association of Secondary School Principals convention in San Francisco.[5] In 2011, the Har-Ber High School Television Productions program received the Pillar of Emmy Award at the St. Louis Emmy Awards sponsored by the Mid–America Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). A Har-Ber student has been named Journalist of the Year at the 2011 Arkansas Scholastic Press Association Convention and Har-Ber TV won the All-Arkansas Award. According to the school's 2011 Annual Report to the Public, students have won academic recognition including selection as a National Merit Scholar and Arkansas Times Academic All-Star.

Extracurricular activities

The Har-Ber High School mascot is the wildcat and Navy blue and Carolina blue serve as the school colors. For the 2012-2014 seasons,[6] the Har-Ber Wildcats participate in the state's largest classification (7A) within the 7A West Conference. Competition is primarily sanctioned by the Arkansas Activities Association with the Wildcats competing in baseball, basketball (boys/girls), competitive cheer, cross country, football, golf (boys/girls), soccer (boys/girls), softball, swimming (boys/girls), tennis (boys/girls, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling.[7]

In 2012, athlete Payton Stumbaugh won the Gatorade Girls Athlete of the Year award after winning five individual state championships, leading the Wildcats to a third-place finish as a team at the Class 7A state meet. She won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.35 seconds, the 100-meter hurdles in 14.98, the 300-meter hurdles in 44.74, the high jump with a jump of five feet, three inches and the pole vault of 10 feet, six inches. The 2012 Northwest Arkansas Times All-Big 6 Girls Track Newcomer of the Year, Stumbaugh also won the girls’ state heptathlon with a state-record 4,260 points, earning individual titles in the 100 with a time of 15.15, the 200 in 25.23 and the 800-meter run in 2:49.15.
