Halestorm is the debut album from the hard rock band Halestorm. Howard Benson, who has also worked with Skillet, Daughtry, My Chemical Romance, Theory of a Deadman, Seether, Three Days Grace and Flyleaf, produced the album.[ 1] It peaked at #40 on the Billboard 200. The first single from the album, "I Get Off" received considerable play time. The song reached #17 on Billboard's Rock list.[ 1] The track "Innocence" was co-written by ex-Evanescence member, Ben Moody.

Lyrical themes

The lyrics of "I Get Off" have an intentional double meaning. On the surface, the song describes being sexually satisfied by giving another person pleasure. It alludes to standing at a window and taking off one's clothes, knowing a person is watching. However, during interviews, the band has explained that the true inspiration for the song was the experience of performing live. Arejay noted that when they first started out, they did not have any help such as light shows, so the band would put all of their energy into the performance. They found that the crowd would feed them back with more energy, and the cycle would continue until the band and the crowd would 'climax' from giving energy to each other.

"What Were You Expecting" also describes live performance. When Halestorm initially began performing, many would judge them as being a girly band before they heard them. During one interview, Lzzy tells of how they opened for Megadeth. Lzzy went out to begin her acoustic introduction for "It's Not You" and received a very negative reaction from the crowd. However, by the end of the performance, the crowd enjoyed it and they sold out of CDs. "What Were You Expecting" reflects this transition, particularly with the lines "I know what you must be thinking/ You're not right" and "What were you expecting?/ Another lullaby?"

Other songs on the album discuss female sexual dominance, especially "Innocence", "Dirty Work" and the bonus track "Tell Me Where It Hurts". Some deal with female independence from romantic relationships, including "Nothing to Do With Love", "Better Sorry Than Safe" and "Bet U Wish U Had Me Back".
