W. Gwyn Thomas was a Welsh rugby union and professional rugby league footballer of the 1910s and '20s, playing invitational level rugby union (RU) for Barbarian F.C., and at club level for Cardiff RFC, and London Welsh RFC, and playing representative level rugby league (RL) for Great Britain, Wales, and Other Nationalities, and at club level for Wigan, and Huddersfield, as a Fullback, or Centre, i.e. number 1, or, 3 or 4.[1]
Playing career
International honours
Gwyn Thomas won a cap for Other Nationalities (RL) while at Huddersfield, won 2 caps for Wales (RL) in 1914–1921 while at Wigan and Huddersfield, and won caps for Great Britain (RL) while at Wigan in 1914 against Australia, while at Huddersfield in 1920 against Australia (3 matches), and New Zealand (2 matches), in 1921 against Australia (2 matches), and in 1922 against Australia.[2]
Notable Tour Match Appearances
Gwyn Thomas played rugby union for Barbarian F.C. against South Africa in November 1915.[3] By this time, Gwyn Thomas had played rugby league for Wigan, the animosity between the rugby union, and rugby league code would normally have precluded any rugby league footballer from ever playing rugby union, however this match took place during World War I, and for the morale of the country, the antagonism between the codes was relaxed.
