Guvera is an online music download and streaming service founded in 2008.
Guvera's product is free music downloads and streams without digital rights management (DRM) paid for (or sponsored) by brands from a large music catalogue available to members in Australia and the United States.[2]
Guvera has launched offering music content to members and reported to have plans to expand its free digital downloads and streaming to include movies and TV shows.[3]
Features
Guvera promotes itself as being established to provide a solution to the illegal downloading of copyright digital content, while simultaneously addressing the desire for marketers to use a more targeted advertising medium to engage customers than is currently available.
Music Catalog
Currently Guvera has more than 10 million songs available for download and streaming.[4] Guvera has signed licensing agreements with Universal Music Group,[5] EMI,[6] Orchard,[7] InGrooves,[8] IODA,[5] Mushroom/Liberation,[9] Shock Entertainment, Valleyarm, the Australian Performing Rights Association, and several rights bodies: APRA, AMCOS, BMI, Rightsflow,[10] SESAC [11] AND ASCAP, enabling it to deliver free streams and downloads via its website.
MP3 Quality
Guvera distributes DRM Free MP3 downloads in 256kbs and 320kps format.[12]
Streaming and Playlists
Guvera allows its users to create an unlimited number of playlists online with the ability easily share their playlists with friends.
Brands and Advertisers
Guvera markets itself as an advertising platform rather than a music platform, its technology makes it possible for advertisers to target broad or very specific consumer groups, showcasing particular aspects of a brand’s personality with relevant music genres in their branded music channels.[5] Content can be downloaded and streamed via branded (channels or) micro-sites from within Guvera’s platform, and the advertisers plays the role of selecting music content (or soundtrack) defining its personality and aligning tastes with the targeted audience.[13]
Mobile App
Guvera's mobile app offers unlimited free music streaming (supported by advertising) which can be accessed on iOS and Android devices. Users can subscribe to the ad-free (Platinum) service for $11.99 per month.[14]
History
Guvera was incorporated in 2008, and launched beta in Australia February 2010,[15] and in the US March, 2010.[16][17]
Guvera was initially released as a beta to a select group of users by invitation only.[18]
In August 2011, Guvera appointed former Virgin Music and Warner Brothers CEO Phil Quartararo as its Global Head of Music.[19]
In September 2011 Guvera moved into new headquarters in The Rocket in Robina, Gold Coast, Australia.[13]
In March 2012, Guvera announced a mobile platform soon to be release to the public.[20]
In December 2012, Guvera released mobile apps for IOS and Android. (Australia only. Anticipating U.S. launch early 2013) [21]
Funding
Guvera was initially funded by AMMA Private Investment out of Australia.[22] Guvera raised about $25m from its base of about 1000 smaller sophisticated investors primarily made up of accounting firms and other financial services businesses.[23]
