Biography

Born in Campinas, São Paulo state, Gustavo started his career at São Paulo team Guarani. He made his debut in 2001 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A and played four times in 2002 Copa do Brasil. He then left for Europe for Levski Sofia,[1] then for Dynamo Moscow, but failed to make any appearance.[2] In July 2003, he returned to Brazil for Goiás, but failed to made any appearance at 2003 National League. He left for Ponte Preta in 2004.

In June 2005, he signed a 1½ year contract with CRB of Campeonato Brasileiro Série B,[3] made his club debut on 8 July. He started that match and CRB lost to Portuguesa 0–3.[4] He made 9 league appearances that season[5][6][7][8][9][10][11] and scored 2 goals against Ituano.[12] After CRB eliminated in the first round, he was loaned to Coruripe which the team entered the third round of 2005 Campeonato Brasileiro Série C, but did not play.[13]

In 2006, he left for Brasileiro Série A side Paraná.[14] On 18 December 2006, Schalke 04 announced that they signed Gustavo in 2½ year contract.[15] But Gustavo refused to play for the German club despite signed the contract, he told the club he wished to stay in Brazil for family reasons.[16]

Desportivo Brasil and loan

Since April 2007, his registration rights was owned by a company, Traffic,[17] through a football club, Desportivo Brasil. He was loaned to Palmeiras on 1 May 2007, where he won 2008 Campeonato Paulista. In August 2008 he extended his contract with Desportivo Brasil until 31 December 2011 and extended the loan until 31 December 2009.

But on 29 January 2009, the loan contract was terminated and Gustavo left for Cruzeiro on the same day, on a one-year loan.[17] Cruzeiro also received 20% transfer fee from Desportivo Brasil if Gustavo was successfully sold after the loan.[18]

On 1 January 2010, Gustavo extended his contract with Desportivo Brasil again, this time until 1 September 2012. On the same day he left for Vasco on a 1-year loan.

But on 26 July 2010, Gustavo travelled to Italy[19] and signed a contract with Serie A newcomer Lecce on the next day.[20] Lecce also had an option to buy him outright in summer 2011 for about €0.7 to €0.8 million.[21] He also obtained Italian nationality though ancestry in order to by-pass the non-EU policy of FIGC.[21] That season he made 19 starts.

On 2 July 2011, he returned to Brazil and signed a 1½ years contract with Botafogo,[22] co-currently extended his contract with Desportivo Brasil.[23]

In January 2012, he was loaned to Portuguesa.[24]
