Gulu University (GU), is a university in Uganda. It is one of the eight public universities and degree-awarding institutions in the country. The list includes the following:
- Makerere University - Founded in 1924
- Uganda Management Institute - Founded in 1968
- Mbarara University - Founded in 1989
- Gulu University - Founded in 2002
- Kyambogo University - Founded in 2003
- Busitema University - Founded in 2007
- Kigumba Petroleum Institute - Founded in 2009
- Muni University - Founded in 2012
History
Gulu University was established by Act 7 of 2001 of the Parliament of Uganda. That Act was subsequently amended by Act 3 of 2006. The university admitted its first students and commenced teaching activities in September 2002.[1]
Location
As of September 2013 Gulu University has three campuses.
(a) The main campus is located approximately 5 kilometres (3.1 mi), by road, northeast of the central business district of Gulu, the largest city in Uganda's Northern Region. This location is approximately 320 kilometres (200 mi), by road, north of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. The coordinates of the university's main campus are:02 47 24N, 32 19 01E (Latitude:2.7900; Longitude:32.3170).
(b) The second campus, known as Gulu University Constituent College Lira (GUCCL),[2] is located in the town of Lira, approximately 108 kilometres (67 mi), by road, southeast of Gulu, also in Northern Uganda.[3]
(c) The third campus of Gulu University is located in the town of Kitgum, approximately 105 kilometres (65 mi), by road, northeast of Gulu,[4] close to the international border with the Republic of South Sudan. That campus became operational in 2011.[5]
Progress
On Saturday, 23 January 2010, during the 5th annual graduation ceremony, Gulu University awarded degrees, to 1,050 new graduates, including 40 medical doctors, the first graduating class of Gulu University School of Medicine (with the help of University of Naples Federico II).[6] The new graduates also included thirteen students who received the degree of Master of Business Administration (MBA).[7]

According to the Gulu University 2008 Newsletter, the university employs 283 full-time staff of whom 155 are academic while 117 are non-academic.[12]
