Gudavi Bird Sanctuary (Kannada: ಗುಡವಿ ಪಕ್ಷಿಧಾಮ ) is located in the Sorab taluk of Shimoga district in the Indian state of Karnataka. Gudavi Bird Sanctuary is located on the Banavasi Road in Gudavi of Sorab Taluk which is 16 km from Sorab town. The bird sanctuary is one of the best five of Karnataka. It is spread over an area of 0.74 square km.

As per survey, 217 different species of birds belonging to 48 families are found at this place.[1][2] A natural lake and the trees gives shelter to this birds. The picturesque Gudavi Lake with trees all along its banks is a beautiful sight in itself. It is a small seasonal lake and is filled with water mostly in the rainy season. Various avian species migrate from across the globe in different seasons for breeding. A platform is built for bird watchers to have a closer look at the birds.

The best season to visit is from June to October. The sanctuary is open to visitors from 6 AM to 6 PM.

By air

The nearest airport to Shimoga is at Hubli which is at a distance of 165 km. Other airports accessible from Shimoga are Mangalore (200 km) and Bangalore (274 km).

By rail

Shimoga has its own railhead and is well connected to Bangalore and Mysore by regular trains. Connection with other cities is less.

By road

Gudavi is 83 km from Shimiga Main Town. You can discover this place my moving toward Jog Falls and take a right hand turn from Sagara towads Soraba Town. Mapping coordinates are 14°26'23"N and 75°0'45"E for your GPS.

Shimoga is connected by NH 206 to the capital city Bangalore. Distance between Bangalore and Shimoga is 274 km ( or via Chitradurga - NH4 is 305 km) and can be covered in about 5- 6 hrs depending on traffic. There are regular buses between the two cities. Shimoga can also be approached from Mangalore and Udupi. The entire route is quite picturesque.[3]
